One at least partial solution would be having wolves de-spawn when scared off by torches etc.

"oh, fuck, a wolf is nearby and seems interested in me, I hope I don't get eaten" would be a lot more interesting then "Bleh, there's another three wolves outside, I'll probably have to fight off like two of them."

I really do wish I could make the wolves less aggro though. It would be nice if a wolf attack was avoidable, rare, and seriously threatening, rather than being something that's unavoidable, routine, and irritating.
