microtransactions in phone games are just the new shitty ringtones huh

wait back then games just cost money once didn't they
I mean most of them were utter garbage but at least you couldn't waste money on them more than once

I do remember playing a few pretty fun Java games…

mostly Snake 3, which came for free with my phone

@noiob i got one game that was kinda like the old metal gear games for NES, it was pretty slick

i also got a version of megaman 2 that was very hard to play in that form-factor

then again, i did so much silly stuff with j2me that wasn't from official stores; on the earliest phone i could, i got a j2me gameboy color emulator, and mostly played pokemon on it

@thingywott I played a ton of Pokémon in MeBoy, and also the GBC Metal Gear until the first elevator which crashed the emulator

@noiob oh! i forgot what it was called, but i think that's the emulator i used too!

and aww, i never ran into a crash with it, but that sounds like a bit of a bummer :s

@thingywott it was still very good! Took me a while to get to that point so it wasn't too bad. I wish I could've played platformers but the screen could only come close to the GBC resolution when it was rotated 90º (it was 240*320 I think) so I didn't have buttons on both sides of the screen

@thingywott I used a modified version called meBoy-F that had filesystem support so I didn't have to use a computer to bundle ROMs

@noiob i never even knew that was a thing! that would have been really handy

i just bundled two pokemon games, a pretty elaborate rom hack of crystal, and a few zelda games

the screen was big enough that i could play without too many issues, and a d-pad with a button in the middle worked really well for pokemon

i don't think i did anything with the zelda games i put into it though

@thingywott I wish I could try that emulator on the N-Gage but I don't have a memory card
