""Driving Educational Videos"" (pt3)

@Draekos what color were the driver's socks?

i hope you were paying attention to this vital information about driving!

@Xkeeper
it's too bad that the idea of subscribing to your interests was implemented in a way that can often be seen as a step back from more general boards and forums

but if there was something that combined the good ideas from both styles of social media, what would it look like?

@Xkeeper what i mean is, while only seeing the newest things without regard for their value or affect on your mental health is Actually Very Bad, one thing that places like birdsite (or even reddit) have on other social media is the ability to curate topics and people that are interesting to you

it's a pretty killer feature, but is it worth all of the drawbacks that come with the way it was implemented?

for me, the answer varies depending on the day--but i know we can do better then that!

@Xkeeper you're not wrong

it wasn't really a serious attempt to do anything, but kinda interesting with how it compared to feed-based social media

i actually came from a pretty small forum too! but eventually the only thing i ever did on there was peruse new posts page and skip over a slew of things i didn't care for

forums have a lot of strengths, but having one that exclusively pertains to your interests is sometimes hard to come by, which was why i found a hybrid kinda interesting

@Xkeeper someone made an interesting interface to the fediverse the other day: puckipedia.com/f66d89ff/i-made

i wonder if doing that, and then combining posts like threadreader might be able to get rid of some of these problems..?

it would turn into a hybrid forum where the topics are still only by people you follow, or are on the same instance as, but also make threads more intelligible and rare posts harder to miss

there's still the mentality difference in what gets posted, but maybe it's a start?

meta thoughts

@Xkeeper i actually watch the local timeline here about as much as i do my main one

one of the appeals of this place for me was that local timelines on instances that attracted you would likely have others who you'd mesh well with--and that's part of the reason i kinda don't care for massive instances

i'm probably very much an outlier though--like, i also use tweetmarker on birdsite so i don't miss anything by people i follow (which also means i limit how many peeps i follow)

@ctrlaltdog@chitter.xyz ohhh! the flank kit

it's fun to flank peeps, even the ones who know you're there

@ctrlaltdog@chitter.xyz swim speed up is a must with ninja squid, since it cuts down your swim speed a lot

if you do the krak-on splat roller, sub saver is nice for not being vulnerable after placing beacons

@Zhorken ooh! mawile is really high here!

i also see maractus and cinccino. less common, but both Very Good

(~) Kinks / Catch 22

@ulvra i think this happens because you put more value in your friends' thoughts, so saying things that might make them uncomfortable can make you pretty skittish

basically, it's hard to tell if they're avoiding your kink because it makes them uncomfortable unless they bring it up first

with a rando, there's no reason to stay in conversations about things they don't like--also, when talking about a kink you don't have with a friend, there's no pressure to continue either

it's 2:20 am, and *of course* i wanna write a roguelike in lisp right this second

I love that the default Emacs scratch buffer text got into Mario Golf (GBC) somehow. I wonder if this was a mis-copy-and-paste from a developer, or if it was another case of a compiler taking random memory contents and using them for padding in the ROM...

@Raspberryfloof ahahahahah, what the heck??

i'm definitely leaning more towards your RAM theory now though

i mean, if i knew my compiler did that, i would sandbox it so hard! i wonder how much sensitive information has been inadvertently distributed like this?

@Raspberryfloof hee, oh gosh

grabbing random bits of ram in compilation seems hellua-insecure

then again, the only other way i could think of this going down is maybe a developer used the scratch buffer as a scratchpad, and saved it as a file?

@ctrlaltdog@chitter.xyz oh, no worries!

i can't actually do right now since it's past midnight here

@ctrlaltdog@chitter.xyz honestly, that's something nobody should assume anyway

it's not really obvious if you haven't done it before

overthinking

@ctrlaltdog@chitter.xyz oh! the way i usually do that is to say something like "i figured it out! you just <answer>" and mark that as the answer

@ctrlaltdog@chitter.xyz i'd be up for this later if you are! (i mean league, i know that rotation is long gone now)

proton/steam play troubles

@ctrlaltdog@chitter.xyz oh, no worries!

i know that things can get pretty confusing at first when digging below the interface of a new system--i think you can do it, though!

good luck, @ctrlaltdog@chitter.xyz..!
