re: hopefully helpful? (infodumpy)
@lyncia but yeah! hopefully i haven't been too annoying with my infodumps ^^'
i'm just kinda extremely emacs, and i figured that knowing about this at least could save you a lot of hours of frustration, since emacs isn't really known for being particularly easy to pick up
hopefully helpful? (infodumpy)
@lyncia depending how deep you are into it, i think it helps to notice that basically everything has tab completion--and even when it doesn't look like it, esc then tab will still probably do completion for what you're looking at
this is basically the biggest way i use things i'm unfamiliar with in emacs
also, if you haven't used it much, C-h is game-changing! it turns emacs from a black box into something where you know how to get help for anything you're unfamiliar with
like, C-h m will describe the mode you're in right now and list all the keys that are available, C-h k tells you what any key or click does, and if you did something weird, C-h l lists all the things you just did with the commands they ran right next to them. C-h i even brings up actual full ebooks about pretty much everything you can just...browse (C-h ? lists all the things C-h can show help for)
@lyncia eight megs and constantly scribbling
@lyncia oh! if you haven't played it yet, into the breach is also really good!
it's by the same people who made faster than light, and while it's pretty simple, it's a really dang solid game
@lyncia (though the neat thing about retro games is that they can run on mostly anything)
@lyncia oh also, these ones are pretty retro, but i also managed to find a lot of older mechwarrior games are free on archive.org, and i had a lot of fun with them
if you can play the original descent, mechwarrior 2, ghost bear's legacy, and mercenaries are all worth playing!
mercenaries especially has the neat thing like in battletech, where contracts you do let you upgrade your mechs, hire new mechwarriors, and change the opinions of all the factions involved
@lyncia oh! i know this dichotomy
i super-love big stompy mechs, even though i would never wish the universes where they exist on my worst enemies
as for games, battletech is pretty rad! it takes a liiitle to get into, but it's just generally a very good game with really satisfying mechanics
@cinnamon wowww, these are really good!
box 64 is just kind of the coolest thing
like, in a fake linux in a fake chroot on a highly restricted ARM environment, it still somehow manages to run x86_64 binaries in a way that tricks them into thinking that the house of cards below it is a good enough environment to just...somehow work!
every level of it is already sorcery, but i can't even believe that what box64 does is even possible on top of all of that
huh, dwarf fortress doesn't actually seem to be as intimidating as i thought it was going to be
i mean, it's still a lot, but i think stellaris might have made it a lot easier for me than the last time i tried..!
also, the whole "press space to pause while you figure out what you want to do" feels pretty at home
literally everything out of frame here is an absolute disaster since i'm still setting things up, but this corner feels pretty cozy already
@cinnamon same tbh
@monorail oh! i know this one
i even do computery things for a living, and i still think they're pretty neat~
this is using a cpu emulator, of course, but its cpu usage really isn't too bad for being actual dwarf fortress in box64 inside a proot
re: fdroid
@lyncia wha
what the actual heck
(and sorry for not being particularly helpful--i was just hoping to maybe get rid of at least a little frustration, since this stuff can be...kinda bad for that =w=)
oh hi! i do computers, and sometimes draw stuff~ i like lo-fi things and cute aesthetics!
i also probably like you
(also, tagged #abdl ahead, soooo 🔞)
