@codl that thing was oviposition

@codl shugo posted a thing on snouts.online, and it turned into an egg avalanche everywhere else

@ctrlaltdog@chitter.xyz that's kinda why i was hesitant to mention it--i don't know of anything oss without a mount-everest-esque learning curve

i actually use org mostly for literate programming, and it does an unreal amount of cool stuff on top of all of keep's features--but it's about as easy to pick up as a car

@imixstimsandkinks also sorry! i wasn't really trying to shoot down your suggestion

i just wanted to make sure bailey didn't go down a research rabbit hole trying to figure out how git could replace how she uses keep now, since it wouldn't be immediately apparent it couldn't do that

@imixstimsandkinks oh, you're not wrong! it can definitely be a piece of the puzzle

it's just not really a replacement for keep on it's own--which is a note taking application (if that makes sense..?)

@ctrlaltdog@chitter.xyz i think there's a google keep extension for org, so you don't need to worry about jumping on that train until you're ready

@ctrlaltdog@chitter.xyz as for hosting, i mentioned that git wasn't a notes app, but it would be a pretty decent way to sync it in a way others can collaborate with you, since org is all in plaintext!

you basically only need ssh access to a server you own, or a github/gitlab account

mobile support for git isn't super-great, but i do use it to sync my keepass database between my computers and my mobile stuff

@ctrlaltdog@chitter.xyz ahh

i can't really suggest many oss replacements for it, because i definitely still use keep--but if i had to exclusively use oss, i'd probably go with emacs org-mode since it covers everything keep does, with the exception of it's interface and syncing meaningfully with mobile (there are apps, but not many are that great)

it does let you export and lot of other formats though

@ctrlaltdog@chitter.xyz oh good! then keep would probably suit you nicely..!

@ctrlaltdog@chitter.xyz one thing to note about keep is that it can get sluggish if you put a lot of notes into it

i used to use it to save links and categorize them by tags, and it became slow enough that i ended up moving everything to a combination of trello, firefox tagged bookmarks, and my calendars

this was about a month ago, so things might have changed, but definitely be careful--and maybe archive the things you won't look at in a long time

@imixstimsandkinks @ctrlaltdog@chitter.xyz in this context git would be more of a syncing mechanism with history than a replacement for a note taking application

i mean, yeah! git is absolutely amazing, but i don't think it really fits the bill here

@Nystre@blimps.xyz oh! you should try em out!

it tf

@ShugoWah@snouts.online unfortunately, this is your yolk to bear

game jam (noun) \ˈgām ˈjam\:

when @Nystre@blimps.xyz makes a game

@ctrlaltdog@chitter.xyz it probably doesn't help that sometimes i just post a thing, and then just react to notifications while doing other things for the rest of the day
