@lyncia oh! if you haven't played it yet, into the breach is also really good!

it's by the same people who made faster than light, and while it's pretty simple, it's a really dang solid game

@lyncia oh also, these ones are pretty retro, but i also managed to find a lot of older mechwarrior games are free on archive.org, and i had a lot of fun with them

if you can play the original descent, mechwarrior 2, ghost bear's legacy, and mercenaries are all worth playing!

mercenaries especially has the neat thing like in battletech, where contracts you do let you upgrade your mechs, hire new mechwarriors, and change the opinions of all the factions involved

@lyncia oh! i know this dichotomy

i super-love big stompy mechs, even though i would never wish the universes where they exist on my worst enemies

as for games, battletech is pretty rad! it takes a liiitle to get into, but it's just generally a very good game with really satisfying mechanics

box 64 is just kind of the coolest thing

like, in a fake linux in a fake chroot on a highly restricted ARM environment, it still somehow manages to run x86_64 binaries in a way that tricks them into thinking that the house of cards below it is a good enough environment to just...somehow work!

every level of it is already sorcery, but i can't even believe that what box64 does is even possible on top of all of that

huh, dwarf fortress doesn't actually seem to be as intimidating as i thought it was going to be

i mean, it's still a lot, but i think stellaris might have made it a lot easier for me than the last time i tried..!

also, the whole "press space to pause while you figure out what you want to do" feels pretty at home

literally everything out of frame here is an absolute disaster since i'm still setting things up, but this corner feels pretty cozy already

@monorail oh! i know this one

i even do computery things for a living, and i still think they're pretty neat~

this is using a cpu emulator, of course, but its cpu usage really isn't too bad for being actual dwarf fortress in box64 inside a proot

in the most recent "getting absolutely wild things working on my phone" news

turns out dwarf fortress does have a text mode!

re: fdroid

@lyncia wha

what the actual heck

(and sorry for not being particularly helpful--i was just hoping to maybe get rid of at least a little frustration, since this stuff can be...kinda bad for that =w=)

re: fdroid

@lyncia (i do think you have the most recent termux though--just with bad repos that yell at you for reasons that don't exist)

fdroid

@lyncia ohhh

yeaaaah, fdroid is just...weird. big fan of updates not working unless you manually install them in-app too :ms_throunking:

hopefully not too splainy

@lyncia yuuuup, it's super-not obvious why too :\

this happens when you don't get a wakelock since android is pretty hardcore about battery usage. you can get one either with termux-wake-lock, or toggling it from the notification termux always has open

(also, a wakelock doesn't mean keeping your phone awake, just stopping termux from sleeping)

@lyncia oh, this kinda sucks, but you need to run termux-change-repo right off the bat right now to pick a better mirror, since the default is pretty bad

@lyncia i mean, saying "i want something better than discord" is like saying "i want something colder than the actual sun"

i don't really know about a lot of lo-fi things that a lot of people could access easily, but imo, gitea is a pretty good self-hosted thing that would be leagues less annoying
