typh is considering stopping esperanto and learning another conlang in its stead. what should i do
keep in mind im also learning french and japanese
@typhlosion from the sound of it, esperanto has just been frustrating to you, so i'm voting to go for something else
esperanto-negative opinion
@typhlosion matter of personal taste here, but I think literally every single conlang I've ever browsed is both better constructed and more beautiful than esperanto.
re: esperanto-negative opinion
@elilla tbh? agreed
lojban is more interesting, toki pona has an intriguing premise, even the fantasy languages built to have realistic imperfections are aesthetically nice. esperanto just feels like a boring, simplified romance language with a bunch of ossified outdated design choices from the early 1900s
@typhlosion what about toki pona?
@Felthry that's one of the ones i'm considering! i'd like to see what different folks recommend though
@typhlosion you could also do like, sindarin or klingon, and learn something that's completely useless outside of conventions
@Felthry in fairness, lojban is also pretty useless in most situations. conlangs in general are pretty useless
anyway i considered it, but the problem is that i don't really have an emotional connection to the source material of klingon or sindarin
or really any artlang other than maybe the dwarven language of paolini's inheritance books, but i'm not sure learning material for that language even exists
@typhlosion we should read the inheritance series again sometime.... it's been a long time and i remember them being Pretty Good
@Felthry the first one is pretty bland imo but the second one and onward really make the world feel like its own thing!
@typhlosion@awoo.space i'm figuring that a lot of people will have solid suggestions of specific conlangs, but I wanted to toss this one into the pile, just in case: what about making your own?
@InspectorCaracal i am like, constantly devoting 1% of my brainpower to thinking about this exact thing
tbh i need to just sit down and develop a grammar and get cracking on a swadesh list or something
@typhlosion@awoo.space conlanging is GREAT
I have an extremely slow-progress conlang I've been dabbling with for ages and it's loads of fun, especially if you ignore the criticisms of people whose idea of a conlang is 50% academic linguistics jargon
@InspectorCaracal japanese has been really inspirational tbh! it's always fun to have your brain very slightly broken by a language with a grammar that's pretty different from your own
somehow i already have two really sophisticated writing systems developed and i dont even have the language yet
(well i have the phonotactics because they informed how the scripts work but not the language itself)
@typhlosion@awoo.space oooh nice!!
@InspectorCaracal i'll post more about those writing systems at some point! probably when i have, uh, something to write in them
@typhlosion@awoo.space also, if you like playing with conlang but find yourself overwhelmed by the task of inventing vocabulary, may I suggest Vulgar Lang https://www.vulgarlang.com/
@InspectorCaracal honestly the task of inventing vocabulary isn't as onerous as the decisions regarding what should be a root vs what should be a compound or built in some other way
@typhlosion@awoo.space haha, yeahhh <.< or the underlying cultural implications of which words have multiple synonyms or antonyms, or which meanings are collected into the same word, not to mention homophones and homonyms....
@InspectorCaracal yeeeeeah ;w; it's a lot
@typhlosion@awoo.space woe for the ease of people who don't Care Too Much
@typhlosion toki ponaaa
@shoofle toki ponaaaaaaaaa........
where should i start learning that?
@shoofle ^o^ .i ckire
