bluesky review so far: a small island of furries and cool-ish folks in a vast roiling ocean of *at best* the most boring, insipid, and unfunny types of person you remember from twitter, *at worst* the most stereotypically incurious and casually cruel people you remember from there

and yet i still see the occasional complaint on there from someone who wishes there were fewer furries there. it is palpable how much apathy fills my heart when i think about posting or following anyone or even viewing my feed. i havent bothered to install any app for bsky and i dont think i ever will

@typhlosion I didn't even manage to find my own island so for me it's LITERALLY just "worst of 2010s Twitter but no hashtags, GIFs or video"

@shi i was lucky enough to know a few folks who i knew were already on there. honestly it is not enough to make me interested in continuing to use the platform for anything

@typhlosion I wanted to give it a go, so I put in a few hours of "work" every day for a week ,trying to find "my people" but there are so few tools to do that, I never managed it 😅

yesterday when I logged in to check my feed, the first thing I saw were two separate posts complaining about how "annoying and unnecessary CWs are", and immediately wondered why I (should) keep coming back :thonkery:

@BatElite nope. it's just 2010s-era twitter again but with fewer features and less brand identity

@typhlosion Well then I remain completely disinterested (what a surprise)

@BatElite that is the correct position. im basically only on there to camp my username

@typhlosion i'm not sure i've heard a single positive thing about the place aside from "it's not Twitter" and that's a REAL low bar

@typhlosion Bsky feels like the "bite-sized PowerPoint presentations that do numbers" slice of Twitter, and I find that very hard to have discussions around. Which I guess works better for folks that want a lot of followers but not a lot of support or discussion, which is part of many communities.

But yeah, moderation concerns aside, it's reductive and hard for me to really engage with. Nice maybe if folks start using it for notifications I guess, but that also makes me really miss RSS.

@typhlosion To reduce this further: my take is that Bsky is better for presentations and Masto is better for discussion.

We do need a notification layer that's pubsub to fill the gap, since we're missing that after Google destroyed RSS and corporations tried turning the web into five websites. But maybe there are better ways of doing that than continuing to use single websites for that purpose.

Irony is, I still use RSS for this from sites that support it, and it's great when it still works.
