There's this odd assumption that if someone challenges you to a debate and you decline, you're acknowledging defeat.

This has always seemed strange to me (not that it stops me from assuming it's truth until I think more carefully), but now I wonder how universal that assumption really is. If this is the "what are you, chicken?" of the world of ideas, are there cultures that sidestep it?
