as more diverse activitypub software comes into existence, there may come to be more and more cases of instances implementing features that aren't supported on other instances or that aren't expected by generic clients. for instance, awoo.space supports unlimited post length when the post has a CW on it; this works in the client but doesn't (and, as far as i know, can't) work in the Tusky mobile client
i wonder if there's some way around this in general
tech musing
i wish desktop OSes had more granular permissions systems for user software. things like "this application is allowed to read and write files to this one folder, display graphics on screen, and play sounds" or "hey this app wants to connect to the internet, do you allow this"
mobile devices have it! web browsers kinda have it! it'd be a fantastic feature for desktop operating systems in general. if an app tries to phone home and you didn't expect it to, you can just say "no"
pokémon, kinda meta
i've seen more and more complaints that the pokémon format is getting stale, which... okay, i get that. it's gotten way more refined over the years, but it's the same basic gameplay loop. they seem to save most of their big experimentation for spinoffs
this is nothing new for nintendo games; the 2d marios get the same complaints
i've done a bit of pondering about how you'd go about changing that for pokémon, and haven't thought of much. eager to hear others' thoughts
@LogicalDash [squints at instance name] wait, you're with babycastles? that's so cool!
The 'Right to Repair' Movement Is Gaining Ground and Could Hit Manufacturers Hard
The EU and at least 18 U.S. states are looking to address the impact of planned obsolescence

bitter cynicism (uspol)
in the past, all i've ever really cared about is people. i want my friends to be happy. i want good-faith humanity to survive. but there's been so much bad news lately, and many of my friends have been having so much trouble just existing... and the culprit is this web of big abstract interconnected evils, the skeleton and nervous system of moloch, and i don't know if it can be impaired without just regenerating.
can't help feeling like the writing is already on the wall.
bitter cynicism (uspol)
when every corporation isn't actively trying to kill or brainwash you, it's trying to cheat you out of your money, time, and agency in every possible way
the rise of outward hate is deemed profitable and carefully nourished and marketed to
if you want to do something about it, the increasingly heavily armed cops are here to keep you in line
the government benefits from all this in a pretty similar way
what can we even do about any of this without incredible bloodshed?
national butterfly center, us wall, cynicism
so a nature preserve and butterfly sanctuary in texas is under threat of having the fucking border wall built through it, against its will
a challenge to the construction was rejected by scotus because of course, let the govt ignore its own laws, right
the carrizo/comecrudo tribe is protesting because that's definitely gonna work
guys, im so tired... happiness and hope are getting hard to find, and it feels like nothing i can do will have any effect
