Wee.... now I'm talking with Hashicorp sales rep because gods damnit their docs don't list the paid features for Terraform cloud and my boss has tasked me with creating a write up to given to our new VP of Operations in order to convince people to pay for Terraform Cloud or Enterprise instead of continuing to have a 100 different islands of Terraform Community and a dozen different instances of free Terraform Cloud...
The care and attention HandToolRescue takes in restoring old tools fills me with hope. ♥️
Work.. Doing a Thing Almost Too Well
So... my presentation and design docs for the architecture of the new Azure Kubernetes project I'm the lead SRE on went over so well that my manager wants to use my flow diagrams and matching why document as the standard for every new project plan we do in the future and as we bring new people on the team he wants me to train them on my thought processes and workflow for building out this doc..
Because nobody in our Org has ever really done a Why doc for a new project.. Just how-to sorts of docs.
(or at least #DoingItWrongButPullingItOffAnyway)
Work thoughs, brain differences
This project really illustrated something about what I enjoy vs most of my other SRE coworkers.
Them: "I fucking love Terraform, if I could just write code all day for stuff I would.. planning.. organizing.. stuff sucks.. Just tell me what you need and I'll write the modules!"
Me: "Ugh... I hate writing templates.. like I love how simple they make stuff but hate coding side..."
My Boss: "Hey Sam... We are going to help this team build this thing in Azure.. since you're completed the basic Azure training can you take point on this project. Figure out how we should made this happen and get stuff together to present to the devs doing the engineering side."
Me:"Sure.. okay.. I can do that."
A week and a half later...
My brain is so full of stuff and oh my gods I've done so much research and I can talk about this a lot..... I need to arrange all this in a sensible manner though.. because I have to talk about it in the morning...
2 hours of making workflow, pipelines and design charts later.. YES YES IT MAKES SENSE IN MY HEAD!
Send charts and nothing else to my team members.
"This is really good. holy shit!"
I guess I should start writing the words to go with this...
4 more hours later.. send off a doc to my boss and other team member.
"Damn this is really good and I like you approached it from a Why we should do things like this angle than 'this is how it should be done'. I think it will drive a lot of good how to questions and thoughts in the meeting tomorrow. Excellent Job!"
Me... to myself.. I really enjoyed that... like it was fun and interesting intellectually.. I like doing research and planning things...
Also me: Fuck I have to present this to people in the morning... commence the anxieties!
Weee... today I made a thing... a plan... a design for new upcoming architecture for the project we are building in Azure on Kubernetes... complete with some pretty diagrams.
I'm rather proud of it... but I'm super fucking nervous about presenting it to the dev team for this service in the morning..
On the upside my boss seems to be very happy with it and really liked the pair of charts I made for it.
HEY HEY GO READ "THIS IS HOW YOU LOSE THE TIME WAR!"

"Are there any monsters under my bed?" she asked.
"No monsters/None," came the replies.
"Then what are you?"
"Eaters/We eat."
"Eat what?"
"Toes/Feet/Anything sticking out"
"I still have all my toes."
"Well/We wouldn't/Not monsters."
"So what do you eat?"
"... socks."

Ugh... today dragons failed at teching... a lot.. I'mma go back working my AKS terraform PoC...
because I went to install a new edgerouter-X and had a bunch of issues.. none of my laptops have ethernet ports and I couldn't find my usb to ethernet adapter... so I decided to use the media PC...
Which is when I discovered our aging Onkyo receiver (RC160) has finally fallen victim to HDMI control board overheat death problem that apparently plagued them... after a decade of service..

I felt the need to share this with you
