quote of the day, history, politics

"I am a socialist, a nihilist, a republican*, anything that is anti-reactionary! I want to turn everything upside down to see what lies beneath; I believe we are so webbed, so horribly regimented, that no spring-cleaning is possible, everything must be burned, blown to bits, and then we can start afresh." -- August Strindberg

(*obviously, that term had a very different meaning for a 19th-century Swedish playwright...)

Huh. TIL Suzanne Vega is known among sound engineers as "The Mother of the MP3," because "Tom's Diner" was the informal audio standard used by the inventor of the format.

Hey, no guarantees here, but... do any of y'all have Dreamwidths still active?

It's dawned on me that the best way to recreate The Grand Old Days of long-form post is to just to go back to a freakin' long-form site....

Will almost certainly stay here, too, even if this goes somewhere. I just wanted to know if there was gonna be anyone else there!

@eredien Pics? :D

I can't wait to get a phone and start posting pics of the wildlife down here. I knew the subtropics were full of life, but I had NO IDEA...

a little nostalgia for you old folks

A band called the 180-G's did an a capella cover of an entire Negativland album. At the very least, I think some of you Cool Millennial Bromides Who Like To Progress will appreciate the sentiments behind this one...

re: tiny media review, assholery (+)

@mmsword It's... mixed. I do respect Adam Reed for admitting to himself he was getting bored with spy games, and I did kinda enjoy seeing Krieger being busted down to "wacky bird mascot" for a season. :>

tiny media review, assholery (+)

It's good to see Sterling Archer back to form.

Well, not GOOD exactly, 'cause he's a bigger prick than ever, but much more entertaining than the last few experimental seasons. Space:1999 is a good match for the Agency Formerly Known As ISIS.

Looking For: LGBTQ+ Novels for Young Adults (Please Boost!)

Hey friends! My sister @missbird is a 6th and 7th grade English teacher and her kiddos are asking her to find more LGBTQ+ novels to read.

If you know of any LGBTQ+ novels aimed at young adult to teen reading levels, please reply with info!!

Thanks!

@KitRedgrave There was apparently one pretty recently that was a pretty big success? FetchNW or something? Someone else will have to fill you in—don't let the stompy Martian warboots fool you, I am not fundamentally a party organism. :)

Haha, Seattle furries, look out! There's a discussion on the New Orleans subreddit about a guy moving from NOLA to Seattle, and I told him y'all were one of the only good remaining parts of the city. He said he's tempted to check out one of your dance nights, on my recommendation...

re: uspol, random encounters (+)

Now he's on about small minority businesses, the difference between corporate greed and healthy entrepreneurship, and predatory lending. I have a new short-duration personal savior.

uspol, random encounters (+)

Sitting in a cafe near a couple guys talking about Grown-Up Business Stuff, and was just about to start disliking them, when the younger one of them busted out a five-minute rant against Social Darwinism. I smiled at him so big and he kinda grinned back.

mood snapshot, comics, anxiety, mortality, The Thing (~)

This comic is a big . If I told you why, it'd probably be a big spoiler alert, but... y'all know about rot13, right?

Huh. This is actually kinda neat. It's a zoomable map of major US town, listed with the name of the resident with the highest Google search profile.

I had no clue Jim Jarmusch was from Cuyahoga Falls. That... explains a lot about my friend Amanda, who IIRC was also from Cuyahoga Falls. :)

Also, re: my hometown, who the fuck is Perry King? :)

OOOOOH, Playdek released a digital version of GMT's strategy card game Fort Sumter. Humiliating the Confederacy over and over and over will be a PERFECT way to spend my weekend. ^____^

re: uspol, old cat yells at pile of shit (++)

You gotta have a lot of damn gall to compare rebuilding fuckin' Hornick, Iowa to rebuilding one of the most beautiful, architecturally ornate cities in the United States of America.

I mean, look at this heap of bullshit: goo.gl/maps/B2VxjnUunyYUcoMUA

I don't even know which end of the hammer I'm supposed to use, and I could have this shithole rebuilt in 37 minutes. THERE'S NOTHING THERE, ASSHOLE.

Called all five of Rep. Steve King's offices and left a lengthy, borderline-obscene-but-not-actionable rant on each one's voice mail, in response to his most recent dig at New Orleans.

I'm sure it will accomplish nothing except maybe attracting the attention of local law enforcement (I kid), but gods know it soothed my angry soul. It's a good enough substitute for eating his face... for now.
