I wouldn't exactly consider the palantiri "evil artifacts". Like, yes, use of one did help to corrupt saruman. But that was less b/c they were evil and more b/c of who was on the other end. Also didn't Aragon use one for a lot of good b/c he wrested control of it from sauron?

not that it doesn't make it a questionable company name, mind.

Nope, they're an old elvish creation that they passed on to the Numenoreans, and then a few survived the destruction of Numenor and the Dunedain used 'em for communication. Places like Weathertop had 'em in the north, in the south it was mostly gondor cities. Sauron got Minas Ithil's when it was sacked, and that's how he got access to them, effectively.

(assuming we can even believe them to begin with, which I don't.)
