Ethics (Long, but important)

Saw something from a friend of mine (on twitter) that made me want to really drive the point home. He was talking about ethics in tech, and ended his posts with the following:

The legacy of the Manhattan Project isn’t Oppenheimer being quoted as saying “oh man look at this sweet-ass research we did!”

And he's right. And I want to share something so that you can understand the stakes.

Ethics (Long, but important)

I responded to him with the following:

For what little it's worth, after a piece of technology I helped develop was used to call down an airstrike, I left defense forever.

That was not its intended purpose, and many other things could have been done with the technology, but that's what they chose to do.

And I have to live with that, even though I have no idea how many have died because of me.

Ethics (Long, but important)

My only solace is that a peace agreement was recently signed that has a serious hope of ending that war for good. >.<

And yes, I should have known better, should have seen more clearly what ramifications what I was building *could* have, but I didn't. And I made a terrible mistake.

Ever since, my focus has been healing, and I know of at least one life that I've managed to save. It's a start, but I have a long way to go.

Ethics (Long, but important)

*I* have become death, destroyer of worlds. And I wish I could undo my mistake.

... Anyways, that's my spiel on ethics. Don't learn the hard way. Just don't.
