@monorail the problem is that they're already separate characters, and unicode has a strict policy about never breaking backwards compatibility once characters are already in the standard

however, even if it can't be used to reduce redundancy, it'd be great to modify existing emojis in ways that aren't currently possible
@typhlosion @monorail There are already direction markers in unicode, I wonder if you could make those work with emoji like that? I guess that would kind of be an abuse of the RTL override, though, and would risk odd behavior in systems that don't expect that.
