Anyway I've been thinking about this for months and the most concise way I can phrase it is probably:
It can be important to feel empathy for your enemy. But even as you do, recognize that they're still an enemy.
@starkatt I've been loving what @Leucrotta says one of their tabletop RP characters – a paladin – would shout before every battle:
"Lay down your arms and you will be treated fairly!"
And if that's not good enough for an opponent, they become an enemy, and should be fought until they stop fighting.
