Just got my census invite, reminder that if you're in a household where someone else will fill in your info for you and you're not out about something you can request a code so you can submit your own details that will overwrite anything they put and they won't be able to find out #census #census2021

i think the amiga famous 'boing ball' demo is like, everything you need to know about the concept of illusion. it pretends to be a bouncing ball, using 3D shapes to create an image of a ball. you're impressed that it was able to draw those 3D shapes. "what a successful illusion of a ball!" you say, completely unaware that there were no 3D shapes, and no polygons, and you were fooled by the real, second-order illusion, accomplished using separate bitplanes and color cycling

PSA: If you run a mail server, don't use dnsbl-3.uceprotect.net as an RBL. It lists basically every VPS provider as a potential spam source and they charge server admins a $100/year "whitelisting fee" to get around it.

Their dnsbl-1 and -2 RBLs are based on actual spam reports.

Okay, which director would make a more appealingly terrible adaptation of "Dune"?

re: How to ADHD. (mh -)

But, on a happier note: Congrats on ten years, @zx3 – I'm genuinely glad you've kept it going for this long! Sorry I wasn't there last night. You know how it is.

How to ADHD. (mh -)

- get really involved at the start of something awesome that happens every couple weeks
- maintain involvement in that thing for a long while
- get distracted from it by other stuff twice in a row
- forget about it the next couple times
- try to resume
- get dragged away once more
- expect to return to it next time
- continually forget to do the thing until it's too late
- give up until years later when reminded that a big anniversary of the start of the thing is coming up
- plan to be there
- get dragged away by other stuff
- give up
- but not really because the brain never lets go of a thing one could maybe attend next time
- forget about it again
- repeat until dead

tired: baseball card in bicycle wheel spokes
wired: clapping coconut halves while on foot

Shaggy, Baggy, and Craggy Game Design

medium.com/kitfox-games/in-pra

Shaggy Design
A shaggy game design is one that forces the player to experience wildly varying systems and gameplay along the journey of the game. Rather than the smooth predictability of an elegantly cohesive experience, a shaggy game is jagged and perhaps even shocking. It’s less of a smooth ‘arc’ or power curve, and more of a wild ride.
Ex. Nier Automata

Baggy Design
A baggy game design is one that has a wide, some might even say excessive breadth of systems. Imagine a pair of cargo pants, each pocket brimming with goodies. It not only allows the player to wander off the critical gameplay path, but rewards doing so, and in fact the player might forget what the supposedly “core” gameplay was at all.
Ex. GTA, Yakuza

Craggy Design
Craggy design is one that has surprising, some might even say excessive depth of systems. Imagine you’re walking along a mountain pass, pretty sure you know where you’re going, stepping over small gullies, when you take a moment to look into a gully and realize it plunges down into a crevasse. Do you dare to follow it to the bottom? Will you ever make it back to the trail?
Ex. Breath of the Wild

The gender today is the smell of lavender and gasoline.

Not unusual: Having David Bowie's "I'm Afraid of Americans" stuck in my head.

Somewhat unusual: Having that spontaneously mash up with the start of Bobby Prince's "Barrels o' Fun" from Doom II.

ADHD means I end up wanting to do insignificant tasks before important ones.

Adderall helps me focus on those insignificant tasks.
