finally, after almost two weeks of shipping snafus, here we are

@Moot @Crocabit (pouring diesel into my game controller) where we droppin boys

@KommaChameleon @Felthry @ShugoWah @Moot @Crocabit (listen i kinda actually want this bc i have a copy of VOOT for DC)

@Felthry @poss_bot @Galuade @ShugoWah @Moot @Crocabit Virtual On is a one-on-one mecha fighting game from the 90s featuring a behind-the-back camera and a dual stick control scheme. It's played split screen or on separate displays.

VOOT is "Virtual On Ontario Tangram", the Dreamcast version of the game.

@Felthry WHOOPS I kinda typed it wrong, it's "Oratorio Tangram". It's a pretty thesaurus name but

Oratorio = a large-scale opera
Tangram = a puzzle about rearranging shapes

So it's basically a fancy way of saying "Virtual On: Grand Remix". Tangram is also the name of one of the game's villains.

@KommaChameleon though I guess plenty of games have really strange names. Radiant Historia, Infinite Undiscovery, Exist Archive

@Felthry Yeah. In many cultures, giving things foreign-sounding names gives them an air of mystery or prestige (e.g. you can order "filet mignon" but not "tender beef"). Japanese media often does this with loanwords from English or other European languages.

@Felthry @poss_bot If this is gonna become another list thread I'm game

Devil Survivor -- this one I like because it almost parses but is something no English speaking person would ever say

@poss_bot @ShugoWah @KommaChameleon which would probably make sense if it had an article in there and I think it actually does but the logo makes it very unclear whether it's The Legend of Dragoon or Legend of the Dragoon

@poss_bot @ShugoWah @KommaChameleon oh and Valkyrie Profile comes to mind, though I dunno if that makes sense in context

@poss_bot @ShugoWah @KommaChameleon also honorable mention to the Suikoden series since the first one was only very tangentially based on the book Suikoden and the later ones had nothing to do with it at all

@Felthry @poss_bot @ShugoWah I think VP makes a lot of sense AND it's a great pun

It's a character study of a valkyrie, and it uses a 2D side view (profile) perspective

@ShugoWah @Galuade @poss_bot @KommaChameleon also, a number of Square games: Final Fantasy itself, and Breath of Fire, Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross, ~~Chrono Break~~, maybe Vagrant Story

@Felthry @ShugoWah @Galuade @poss_bot It's called Dragon Quest because it always drags on 💣💥

@ShugoWah @Galuade @poss_bot @KommaChameleon and other Enix games: Act Raiser, Soul Blazer, Star Ocean Til the End of Time, Robot Alchemic Drive

@Felthry @ShugoWah @Galuade @poss_bot I always thought Star Ocean was a pretty cool name; it's like you're exploring new places on a boat but in space this time

@Felthry @Galuade @poss_bot @ShugoWah Morrowind = Tomorrow + Wind; you start by having a weird dream during a sea storm that serves as a premonition of dangers to come

Skyrim = rim (edge) of the sky; we got really tall mountains here

@KommaChameleon @Galuade @poss_bot @ShugoWah well I don't know if Skyrim counts as a pun, that always struck me more as a kenning that became the name of the place

@poss_bot @Felthry @KommaChameleon Like no bullshit I somehow played it for hundreds of hours

That might've been the first game I really played with an "endless" game mode and I just loved it

@KommaChameleon @Felthry @ShugoWah this is STILL technically a continuation of the original post where shugo was showing off the xbox adapter and i'm glad that in the intervening like 30 posts we've had maybe 3 or 4 distinct sub threads
