just checked some specs of our new laptop and apparently all its cpu cores are clocked independently... including *different clocks for two logical cores of the same physical core*

how the hell does that work

@Felthry Intel chip? sounds like a whole lot of dark magic and a great way to get race conditions and also what

@Felthry you're gonna have to be a bit more specific, there's like five hundred i7s 😄

@noiob well I was just saying that to indicate that yes it's an intel processor

specifically it's an i7-9750H

@Felthry @noiob where did you read that info? Afaik there's a base clock, a boost clock and all cores adjust independently between these two depending on load, it's pretty much how modern CPUs work? I could interpret what you're saying wrong though

@Siphonay @noiob From reading the real-time core clock frequencies using some software the laptop came with

@Siphonay @noiob yes but how do two logical cores on the same physical core have different clock speeds?

@Siphonay @noiob (also they can go slower than the base clock, this laptop clocks them down to below 1ghz when there's low enough load)

@Felthry @Siphonay I think that just means the base clock is adjusted

@Felthry @noiob I think I got it wrong yeah it can clock from low frequencies to the base clock and the boost clock is unlocked when there are intense loads

@Felthry @Siphonay I don't think they can? can you show a screenshot of that tool?

@Felthry @Siphonay yeah I don't get how they aren't synced up in pairs, they're supposed to feed the same ALU after all

@noiob @Siphonay I suppose they probably do have multiple ALUs (or at least ALUs with independent parts; there's probably no more than one divider for instance but several adders) per core though, intel pioneered that kind of architecture a while ago
