remember video game console hoaxes?

we remember being absolutely convinced as a kid that nintendo was working on the gamesphere as a follow-up to the gamecube

and there was stuff about an xbox 720 floating around the internet for ages

we also remember thinking that since 16 bit consoles were "better" than 8 bit ones and 64 bit ones were "better" than 16 bit ones, that that obviously meant the gamecube was a 128-bit console (it's not, it's also a 64-bit architecture)

we also thought that the atari 2600 was a 4-bit system (it's not, it's 8-bit)

@Felthry they're still a thing, remember the fake Nintendo NX controller?

@noiob can't say we ever saw that! do remember a bunch of speculation about the NX that all turned out to be wrong though

@Felthry Well, yeah, the 2600 was 8-bit, but they left like six of the bits just sitting in the drawer at any time.
