as someones who don't like horror games and have an anxiety disorder, horror games/movies are a weird concept to us

like, "oh yes i'd like to be extremely stressed for a few hours, please make the experience as stressful as possible"

i get that some people like that! i don't get why and i doubt i'll ever understand because we get stressed enough with everyday life to need fairly hefty anxiety medication

@Felthry have you been on a roller coaster? same thing, adrenaline makes you feel good

@Felthry @noiob

I think it kind of falls into that space of media where... it's an excellent way to "practice" states of mind that would be dangerous in another context, but in this one you have the option to just get off the ride at any time. It's why we enjoy the few stressy horror games that we do, we know we've only gotta press one button and we're safe. And also why we can't ride roller coasters, there's no off button.

@Felthry For the experience of an 80s kid, growing up, I shied away from horror movies because I imagined they had to just be impossible for a tender soul like mine to bear. That they'd be the opening to _Tales from the Darkside_ but *worse*.

It turns out (at least) the 80s model horror movie is generally more hilarious-plus-gorey and I'm pretty sure I could have taken it at age 15. Just scared myself out of it.

(And of course there are really creepy, terrifying movies, even from that era.)

@Felthry I'm in roughly the same space thanks to my CPTSD.

I've found I find more enjoyment exploring those settings from an external viewpoint, finding all the spoilers I can on something before even deciding if I want to watch or play it. The Alien franchise is utterly fucking terrifying to me and as such I can't engage directly with it, for example, but I *can* learn about it from a spoilers-are-fine view in order to find out what others see in it.

After all, there is no law or even social contract that requires one to engage with media in any one specific way. :anarchy:
