how to make a zelda game with zelda as a protagonist
(because we were reminded of this)
step 1: link gets captured by the villain, probably in a crystal or something
step 2: zelda gets a weapon and tries to save the day
step 3: the same kind of puzzles, dungeons, game mechanics, and so on that you'd use in any other zelda game
step 4: zelda beats the villain, frees link, and saves the day
there are good and bad ways to write the plot stuff, but the game design stuff doesn't change at all

@packbat I wonder if it would be Zelda with a weapon, or Zelda using the power of light?

@Felthry I think action-adventure sword-and-board gameplay is enough of a core part of the Zelda series that I'd want her to have some kind of physical weapon. It might be more magic-heavy than other Zelda games, but if we removed weapons altogether, that'd make it hard to sell as a /mainline/ Zelda game.
And anyway, she's Sheik and Tetra in other games, it's not weird for her to stab enemies.

@packbat that's fair! (though we tend to see sheik as some form of plurality more than "just" a secret identity)
i was thinking along the lines of how she plays in age of calamity

age of calamity spoilers re: plurality re: how to make a zelda game with zelda as a protagonist
@packbat This was gameplay stuff i was referring to, not lore stuff; in age of calamity she has two weapon choices, either the sheikah slate (making her a heavily item-focused character, using a variety of items to attack) or a sacred bow (where she uses the power of light to fight, which manifests as both light-based magic and occasionally arrows of light)

re: age of calamity spoilers &c.
@Felthry *nods!*
We were thinking of gameplay stuff, too - and a sacred bow would be very cool! Riffing on the power of light would probably be a good way to design the whole progression-of-mechanics system that Zelda games do.
