@Felthry please elaborate
@typhlosion and evidently any two-dimensional topological manifold can be cut apart into a collection of pairs of pants
@typhlosion the pair of pants itself is a sphere with three distinct points removed from it
@Felthry i was wondering what the punchline here was. now it makes sense why it's called that
that sounds really cool
@typhlosion It just sounds really ridiculous to me because this is a serious topology thing, which is a very serious field of mathematics, and it contains a concept referred to as the pants decomposition
@typhlosion someone should make a joke involving the pants decomposition and the Jeans instability (from astrophysics)
@typhlosion jinstability (Jeans instability)
@typhlosion and no, i am not going to explain why it is called that because it's funnier to not know, though you might well be able to figure it out
@Felthry oh no i know why it's called that, don't worry - or at least i have an intuition based on what i know about topology
@typhlosion this is called the pants decomposition of the manifold
