re: Pokémon Legends: Arceus

@ziphi apricorns don't seem to grow in sinnoh's climate, but there would probably be enough trade to get them from johto

re: Pokémon Legends: Arceus

@ziphi We know that apricorns were used as pokeballs long in the past, though not specifically how long
-F

@packbat yeah, like an otter! apparently a lot of people think otherwise though
-F

vaporeon:

@artemis@vulpine.club @avie aaa i'm really glda to hear that
-F

@avie aww, thank you. it's appreciated more than you probably think
-F

@avie i'm not saying you have to! i'm just kind of infodumping a little
-F

@avie well, much of it uses latin alphabet symbols turned upside down or flipped backwards like ɹ or ɔ or ɯ, or little modifications to them like ɰ, so it doesn't look a lot like the latin alphabet

then it also uses other symbols like ʃ and ʒ, not as variants of existing symbols but for different sounds
-F

@avie a majority of the symbols that are just latin letters are very close to how those letters sound in english, except for vowels because english vowels are a nightmare, but they still are similar enough; the e in bed is /ε/ for instance, since /e/ is already taken for roughly the sound in "bay" (which is actually a diphthong, /e/ doesn't occur on its own in english i don't think)
-F

@avie it was designed to be based on the latin alphabet which makes it pretty easy to remember for people who speak european languages! at least until you get to some of the things used to transcribe features that aren't in european languages, anyway
-F

@avie it's not that difficult to learn the bits necessary for broad transcription of english at least! might be worth doing

or might not, i can't say what you'd find worthwhile
-F

@avie what you said would be /lεstɚʃɚ/ i suspect, so i was pretty close
-F

@avie oh so the first r is still pronounced? I thought BrE left those out most of the time
-F

@avie that one is something like /lεstəʃɚ/, right?
-F

re: crude language oh no

@avie @owashii@plush.city @Moot this is just the cot-caught merger, isn't it? Most American accents (excepting some southern ones) have the merger, but i believe most British accents do not

the majority of Americans likely can't hear a difference between those vowels
