re: not actually food hopefully

@patchwork aged to 47% capacity with a genuine Dale carbon composition resistor

@patchwork the center, the terminals would probably not be noticeably different

weird thought we just had: i wonder if a dead alkaline battery would taste different from a fresh one

re: Breath of the Wild (master cycle)

@LexYeen @sharkNserg Or just the option of camels that are mechanically identical to horses but are fine with sand
-F

@LexYeen take the best parts of both tradition and modernity and make a new thing that's better

re: Breath of the Wild (master cycle)

@sharkNserg that's fair. it would be nice if you could get something like a horse to the desert.

re: Breath of the Wild (master cycle)

@sharkNserg @LexYeen okay but imagine how cool it'd be if both of the people in that picture were shield surfing behind sand seals

re: Breath of the Wild (master cycle)

@LexYeen @sharkNserg Makes sense to me. We have no experience with motorcycles but I would think they would need to be designed differently to work well on loose sand compared to normal off-road stuff. Plus you might need extra filtering in the carburator or whatever magic carburator-analog the master cycle uses, to prevent it getting clogged up with sand and dust

re: Breath of the Wild (master cycle)

@LexYeen @sharkNserg i am reminded of how in pokemon xd you had to get your motorcycle upgraded to a hovercycle before you could cross the desert parts of the map

we finished final fantasy 7 remake

the ending was very cryptic, then the credits started and we were reminded that the main producer was tetsuya nomura and then we understood

still don't know what that one line in the ending meant but it makes sense that it would be super cryptic if nomura is involved

re: diablo immoral, games preservation, hot take

@foxposting Especially not Ubisoft, EA, or Activision/Blizzard.
-F

@Azure yeah if there was a better way to put things in an "i need/want to do this at some unspecified later point" category, we'd take it

bookmarks don't count, that's more of a "i want to go to this frequently" thing

re: question for USians, money

@lizardsquid No, is that a thing you can do elsewhere?

rambling about soldering, long

MSOP-8 has the same pin pitch as SSOP, 0.65 mm, but MSOP-10 and larger has a pin pitch of 0.5 mm, smaller than anything else we've soldered before. We've also never used a hot air station before, or dispensed solder paste

But we just went for it and i think were successful enough to make it work

we actually got a new soldering iron just for it (though not a whole new station; we already had a Weller WX2 station and we got a WXPP "pico" soldering iron for this), as well as a hot air rework station (a really cheap one from Yihua, then when that kept blowing a fuse and the motor made weird noises, returned that and got a slightly less cheap one from Sparkfun that worked perfectly)

our boss was surprisingly amenable to the cost of this equipment

the soldering tip we used was an RTP 001 C MS, which has a 0.1 mm tip radius, which is tiny--but fits between the pins of an MSOP-10

used leaded solder because we didn't want to take any chances, normally we use lead-free

did use lead-free solder paste though, partially because it was cheaper

Yesterday at work, we did an Achievement™:

Successfully (we think) soldered an MSOP-10EP, including the exposed pad (which was on a large ground plane with thermal vias, too!)

There were a couple solder bridges we had to fix and we're hoping the high temperatures of the hot air rework station we used to solder the exposed pad didn't damage it (haven't got all the passives around it soldered yet so can't turn it on to test) but we did it, tested continuity with a multimeter and no shorts

re: oc nerdery

@heatherhorns i imagine fredrika would order a whopper, and somehow get one, though no one in the kitchen has any memory of making it or putting it in the bag

re: Genuinely fucking evil comment I received from a doordash customer

@sharkNserg well fuck that customer

like it was a different company (topcraft) but most of the people at said company got together and started studio ghibli after topcraft went bankrupt

so The Hobbit (1977) is arguably a ghibli movie
