well, this is somewhat alarming. Whenever the postal service last came by our apartment building, they left half the mailboxes hanging open! We let someone know and closed them but that's definitely something to report to the post office. I hope no one's mail got stolen.

Acronym overloading is weird. I keep reading "LDR" (meant as "long-distance relationship") as "light-dependent resistor", "NRE" (meant as "new relationship excitement") as "non-recurring engineering", and I know there are others that I just can't think of right now that trip us up a lot too

What's the algorithm for determining whether or not mastodon shows you a post from someone you follow that's in reply to someone you don't follow? I've seen it sometimes show it and sometimes not, and I think it has to do with the proportion of people you do follow in the thread.

Does that extend to other posts that mention people? If I were to mention someone in a post without it being a reply to them, would it still show up in everyone else's home column?

sometimes, translators need to alter names in video games because the japanese names are close to inappropriate words in english. I find it amusing in an immature sort of way to think that Final Fantasy V's protagonist was almost named Butz (translations changed it to Bartz), and the antagonist of Ys I was Dark Fukt (Dark Fact in translations).

huh. So a little while ago we ordered something that was getting shipped from Japan and just today we got the notification that it arrived in the destination country... in New York. Why would it go through New York???

then again, "shipping label created" might also be pretty bad because you know the seller has printed out the shipping label but you have no idea when it will be picked up

this is of course ignoring ones that mean "we have no idea where your package is" because that's a completely different problem

the worst package tracking status is "out for delivery" because it's just so tantalizing

you know you'll be getting the thing soon but the delivery routes are long so it could be just about anytime that day
