why is a red herring called a red herring

why not a teal salmon

thought: what would a bike or motorcycle designed for a three-legged person look like?

Chrono Trigger, Wild ARMS 2, Tales of Symphonia, and Suikoden all solved the random encounter problem in completely different ways and we appreciate that

hamburgers and hot dogs just feel... plain? and afawk they were both originally german. and pizza is originally italian, though it's been pretty thoroughly reinvented in chicago

Show thread

i guess the US is famous for its food too, even if that food seems kind of plain to us who live here

i feel like the only real uniquely USian cuisine is probably barbecue and cajun, and maybe southwestern/tex-mex too (it's pretty distinct from mexican food but many people would lump the two together)

Show thread

really it's like there's a few countries that are really famous for their cuisine

italy, mexico, india, china, japan, korea, thailand, greece, turkey, and then if you get a little more niche you might encounter jamaican, cuban, and other caribbean countries' cuisine

but that leaves out a lot of the world. what about brazilian food? or any of the various sub-saharan african countries? or central asia? i want to try food from other cultures and don't know the first thing about it

Show thread

it occurs to me that we don't actually know much about european cuisine outside of italian, british, and greek

all we know about german food is bratwurst and sauerkraut, all we know about french food is that it's famous for being really pretentious, and we don't know anything about like, spanish or finnish or dutch or i dunno belarusian food

has anyone made a video game based around exploiting and playing with glitchy physics engines?

it's not like there are more of them than before, it's just... they feel more overwhelming than before

Show thread

do you ever just have moments where, even though it was fine a few minutes ago, suddenly getting notifications on things feels overwhelming

who would win

though since we never had an original gb, just a gbc, maybe should go with a color one like that

but finding an artist who would work within the color limitations of the gbc (and who would be willing to learn what those limitations are) would be hard

Show thread

or like gameNB or gameenby or something? not sure how you'd write that with the two Es

Show thread

commission idea: four-color greenscale pixel art of me on a gameboy screen, with the logo changed to read gamenby

we also remember thinking that since 16 bit consoles were "better" than 8 bit ones and 64 bit ones were "better" than 16 bit ones, that that obviously meant the gamecube was a 128-bit console (it's not, it's also a 64-bit architecture)

we also thought that the atari 2600 was a 4-bit system (it's not, it's 8-bit)

Show thread

remember video game console hoaxes?

we remember being absolutely convinced as a kid that nintendo was working on the gamesphere as a follow-up to the gamecube

and there was stuff about an xbox 720 floating around the internet for ages
