today we learned: apparently sachet is pronounced /sæʃei/, not /sætʃεt/

also apparently it's a word that people actually use, just not in the US. we had always kinda thought it was one of those archaic words that just isn't used anymore, for some reason

does anyone else feel like stores should be required to include tax in their price labels?

i feel like this is probably a thing they do in most of the world and just the US is weird again

listening to the prerecorded tapes and stuff they included with the first stereo tape machines is kind of fascinating

it's weird to imagine a time when stereo wasn't the default

not that we're really upset about that, it's just an inconvenience that's unavoidable given All This

but we can probably start applying for jobs there. need to look into the UK and Ireland and Australia too though

(those are our first non-north-american choices because we would prefer not to have to learn a new language)

did a bit of research into what it'd take to move to new zealand, since we're starting to look into jobs outside the US

apparently, we're automatically qualified for a visa on the basis of having a degree and experience (at least i hope we can claim our research assistantship as experience) in electrical engineering, a field they have on their "most needed" list

but of course because of covid they're not taking immigration applications "until further notice"

context for this: we use almost exclusively the right shift (even typing things like |, yes that's awkward) and we've noticed some pain in our right little finger lately and i wonder if they're related

Come to think of it, D-sub connectors are already "D subminiature", but I don't think we've ever seen the larger ones. Maybe that's why?

But smaller ones do exist, and you can still buy them, though the lack of production leads to very high prices; just take a look at this listing on digikey: digikey.com/product-detail/en/

There's also a "nano-D" size that we only just learned about that's even smaller and even more ridiculously priced: digikey.com/product-detail/en/

I wonder why miniature D-sub connectors never took off, when mini-DIN and mini- and micro-usb became ubiquitous.

I guess we might as well ask here... Does anyone happen to know of an employer that has part-time (20-25 hours) positions for electrical engineers, that can offer sufficient pay to live off of (thinking $30-$35/hr or more but cost of living varies so maybe more or less depending on location)?

We're not picky about location, willing to move pretty much anywhere in the US... or anywhere else that speaks english really, not that we know how immigration works...

why did video tape have a different color to it than cassette tape? was it a different formulation?

sometimes i just think about how audio CDs had vastly more storage capacity *purely in the metadata subchannels* than most people could dream of having on a hard drive when the CD first came out and yet somehow no one considered using CDs to store data until way later and just. why did no one think of that
