the fact that the irrational number that's the hardest to approximate by rational numbers is algebraic (it's (1+√5)/2) feels kind of weird, but also as you think about it it's just "well of course it would be", but then think a little more and it feels weird again

i am curious, does anyone with some knowledge of linguistics know why it is that people with certain accents tend to put an epenthetic /s/ in the middle of the word "subtract", turning it into "substract"?
