last wednesday's xkcd is just us xkcd.com/2621/

like all the famous people we do know, we know for weird reasons

like, apparently steward copeland was part of a really popular musical group but we know him as the guy who composed spyro's soundtrack

and one of the examples in the comic itself--we know david bowie as the guy from labyrinth, but i know he was a really popular musician too

jrpgs were still really big in that time period, the psx and ps2 had a ton, so it's not just a lack of games

did nintendo have policies at the time that limited them somehow? i know tthey were not on good terms with squaresoft at the time

why are there so few rpgs on the gamecube and n64

the wii didn't have a lot either but it feels like it had at least a few dozen, pretty sure the gcn and n64 had less than ten each. maybe less than ten combined
-F

it's so weird to us to go to the pharmacy and see omron-branded medical equipment

apparently that's their main business but we know them for making really good electromechanical relays, they're like the #1 or #2 brand of those along with TE

the Hearth :ms_agender_flag: boosted

Everything is a UFO if you're really bad at identifying things but really good at throwing them.

considering that the original reason given for vampires not having a reflection and not showing up in photographs was because of the use of silver for mirrors and photographic film at the time, i imagine modern vampires would have reflections (mirrors these days are made with aluminum as a backing, as it's substantially cheaper and doesn't tarnish) and would show up in photographs (image sensors contain a negligible amount of silver)

apparently there are ios and android ports of final fantasy 13

how does that work
-F

so is kirby's favorite food called analog tomatoes now?
-F

mh-, food

today has been really frustrating in general and we were going to go to dairy queen and get some ice cream to make it a little better and then they were closed, despite having the open sign on and it being before closing time and that was just kind of the last straw and it's just Bad
-F

has anyone on here played the game "what the golf"? or just good with computers? we got it a while ago and just tried it today and it looks fun but every time you beat a level there's a golf clap sound effect that is *deeply* unpleasant to us (misophonia) and i would really like it if someone could tell us how to turn that off without also turning off every other sound effect
-F

mario 3 romhack where the only change is that you always have the frog suit. same physics regardless of powerup status, no tail swipes or fireballs, all powerups do is give you a second hit point
-F

i like how we're getting really good, usable open-source programs for even really niche things these days

kicad is the big example that comes to mind, a mostly-full-featured (except for pad stacks and net ties, please hurry and add those) EDA suite, but also krita, and we're seeing some friends talk about a game boy SDK thing called gb studio that is apparently looking promising

subtoot (teasing) re: weird, directed at reader

weird, directed at reader

consider being modular

it's fun
-F

concept for a bit thing that i don't think we'd do but has promise:

True Facts from a More Interesting World

where it's all just, things that are not true but it'd sure be interesting if they were

like "the French language was a sixth-century practical joke that got way out of hand" or something like that

re: food, does this count as a hot take?

works well on most anything
