Very whimsical as battle music goes, but then the Dragon Quest (/Dragon Warrior) series is whimsical in general! I like how emphatic it starts out, then transitioning into a fairly slow-paced melody (for battle music anyway), without losing its forward momentum.
This series is new to us, so I don't know that much about any callbacks to previous entries or anything, unfortunately.

It's kind of amazing how utterly broken the gen 1 and 2 pokemon games are, considering how stable and glitch-free they are if you don't actively try to break things
dragon quest has some amusing puns in the monster names.
Dragon Quest 7 has a plant-bird enemy called a kingfuchsia (kingfisher + fuchsia) and another plant enemy called a woebergine (woe + aubergine).
And Dragon Quest 8 has a dragon carrying a jar called a jargon, which really amused us when we first saw it.
