I really need to work on my tendency to ask excessive questions.... I had thought that was mostly just a problem in the classroom but today someone confronted me about doing it in a chatroom and... well, I feel really bad about upsetting someone and derailing conversations. I didn't even realize I was doing it, and that's the hardest part to overcome. How do you correct behaviour that you don't know exists until someone gets upset at you about it?

of course actually manufacturing it would be a _pain_ because you would need to grow a very thin, precise layer of n-type semiconductor on a metal substrate and then apply a second metal terminal to it, as well as making an n+ region in your semiconductor for the base contact, because you need an ohmic contact there but a rectifying contact everywhere else

thought: you can make a diode using a p-n junction or a metal-n (schottky diode) junction. A transistor is two back-to-back diodes with a very thin shared region. Can you make a metal-n-metal "schottky transistor"?

I like the phrase "with all due respect", because while it signals that the following words are going to be disrespectful, it also signals that you probably don't think there's any respect due, even though it seems to imply that you're attempting to be respectful.
