"Mastodon admins can read your DMs!"

Twitter reads every DM you send. Every DM you send is run through their abuse filters and data aggregators.

If you don't trip some alarm your text is likely anonymized and shoved in some data farm for datasci purposes-- but if you do, your DM history might get flipped to some staffer to peruse for what they constitute "Abuse"

Twitter reads your DMs dozens, hundreds, or thousands of times.

If you ever find yourself thinking you're making bad tech decisions, remember that the music industry turned down Napster's offer of $1,000,000,000 for not killing them, plus royalties going forward, plus metadata the industry would still kill their own children to have today, plus a lock on digital music downloads likely stronger than Amazon has ever had or will ever have on ebooks. All on the theory that killing Napster would lock the file sharing genie back in its lamp.

#BandcampFriday is a great time to remind you that if you want to go looking for new music and support black artists on that service, Black Artist Database exists.

Last month I went looking thru the Experimental tab and came across .mp3Neptune, and I'll say this, whether you like what they make or not, they -sure are- experimental.

re: ethics discussion

@relee Harm is anything that is inimical and/or deleterious to the continued existence or well-being of the subject in question.

One may ask, "How do we know if it is the case?" And to that i say, we definitionally can't because it is a categorically subjective classification, and requires us to view the situation on a case-by-case basis.

As for what separate us from animals and/or object. I'd say I honestly can't tell you. As an animist, I see quality in the souls of all that exists, that includes us, animals, humans and objects that are considered "not living." But then again, considering that the universe is itself constantly interacting and involving micro- and macrocosms of itself in endless cycles of death and rebirth, what really makes it so special to be considered "living" that it only extends to carbon-based life forms with self-replicating proteins?

Would you consider stars to be alive? Because I do, as well as landmarks, monuments and world wonders, for that matter.

re: trans stuff

@relee Yeah, in a way we can see it as macrolabels and microlabels. Macrolabels are a shared umbrella label that shows solidarity through a common struggle. While microlabels are there to help people zero in on identifying themselves and validating their individual existence. Both are good to have.

re: ethics discussion

@relee A simple answer would be if the consequences of not drawing my sword is that more harm will happen.

As for who? Well, that's asking the wrong question, because at its roots it's all about being able to draw our boundaries, and being able to enforce them.

Personally speaking, we generally have a live and let live philosophy when it comes to others living their lives, as long as what they are doing isn't harming those around them.

re: trans stuff

@relee That is true, our system is a prime example of how we are all very different gender-wise, but still fall under the trans and nonbinary tree.

However there is a danger in being lead to thinking that the solution is to dip into exclusion. I think the solution is to create more terms to describe our unique experiences. After all, English is a woefully limited language for describing our exact specific experiences with gender.

In order to understand recursion, one must first understand recursion.
