strong opinions from growing up in Miami

@fakemaxkeeble In fact, the best snapshot of a capitalist hellscape in 30-40 years might be a snapshot of today, frozen in time as the ultra-rich freeze everyone else out.

That’s exactly what Cuba looked like when my parents were able to visit there when the embargo was (briefly?) lifted. A small tourist strip and city to keep appearances and for government officials, with shantytowns for everyone else based on infrastructure from the 1950s.

@fakemaxkeeble@snouts.online For setting, global warming has already made hurricanes substantially worse since I grew up there. That trend will continue into the capitalist hellscape future — folks just kind of casually aware a big storm is coming, and that the local Publix is already cleared out.

Huge market for things that can survive local infrastructure getting knocked out. Workarounds to water damage. Gig workers living in broken down boats for housing.

@fakemaxkeeble@snouts.online Also, since no one on thread has mentioned it yet: Cuban and Latinx culture would play a big part, especially in South Fla. I think folks would (correctly!) compare what’s happening to the hell of living under Castro, and that that would be a cultural touchstone as times get bad.

Meanwhile, up in Clearwater, Scientologists just bought Clearwater (sun-sentinel.com/news/florida/), and they’re busily trying to annex tech companies.

NaNo suggestion, capitalism

@DialMforMara @fakemaxkeeble@snouts.online This, this this this.

U. Miami has a page from their job incubator that reads like the YA novelization of this: thelaunchpad.org/

The predatory hunger of tech capitalists to eat Miami and Tampa alive, compared to the lived experience of families that fled Castro and natural disasters to start a new life in South Florida, would play out this way. Folks know how to be good to each other through the bad times.

tech, tiny computer

Now playing with e-ink displays. A few hours of soldering and staring at wiring charts later, I decided to be vain.

The goal of this experiment is to display some data graphs, but might as well have some fun with it first.

Did you know that dragon tummy are warm and soft? Touch it. Touch the belly.

ring fit adventure, day two

Turns out I had the leg joycon set up wrong yesterday, so day two was just about the right level of effort.

Yay for not being as out of shape as I thought I was! And for this being a routine I can probably keep.

@salameleon@snouts.online Missed this yesterday. Would be glad to try these, time permitting.

ring fit adventure, day one

I can lower the intensity, but I think I’m going to stick with it in small chunks, balanced with using an exercise bike. I kind of need to build endurance again.

ring fit adventure, day one

Me, from the ground not even ten minutes later: I may have misjudged the intensity of this game a little.

ring fit adventure, day one

So I bought Ring Fit Adventure for my niece and her family, as an early birthday gift. I also got myself a copy.

Niece: *sets game to low intensity*
Ring Fit Adventure: Here’s 3 reps! Great job!
Niece: Fitness is fun!
Me: This doesn’t look too bad.

... some time later...

Me: Hm, I’ll try the second highest setting.
Ring Fit Adventure: Here’s 30 health bars just for one attack.
Me: oh no

tech, game randomizers

My weekend project: bought a knockoff 3DS (GPD XD Plus), flashed it with Cleanrom, and tried a couple random seeds on it (alttp, oot, metroid prime) successfully. I also cobbled together a serviceable streaming setup for the thing using Android screen sharing.

I wonder if this has value to other folks. It's a major step up from running these off of a phone when I'm not at my desk, that's for sure.

assistance request, ongoing long thing, paypal link, mh (--)

So, Tess ( @pillowcat ) is... no longer able to work, and I'm not able to work and still fighting through disability stuff. We need about a hundred dollars to make rent this month... and that's assuming we manage to spend nothing on food the rest of the month (that's near impossible with my disability) we thought we were going to be ok after asking for help last week but now we're spiraling b/c of neither of us being able to work

paypal.me/nautilee every little bit helps

dubious translation

I bought a knock-off 3DS for running emulators that is actually an Android gaming cabinet. This is proudly emblazoned on the back of the box.

I think I get where they were going with it.

Another amusing exchange from my mom.

"You see Seattle is pretty much full of sad gay animals."

"Oh no! Why are all the puppies and kitties sad?"

"No mom it's me. I'm the sad animal."

"Oh."
