"Tourists at the Koorana Saltwater Crocodile Farm in Coowonga, Queensland, Australia, including 62 males and 41 females, aged 18–66 (M = 34.2, SD = 13.3), were randomly assigned to play a laptop-simulated Electronic Gaming Machine (EGM) either: (1) prior to entry, or (2) after having held a 1-m saltwater-crocodile." link.springer.com/article/10.1

@PaulFerence @vahnj Super-blood-sugar and super-dehydration are the worst superhero powers ever, I'm sorry to say :(

I have latex dromaeosaurs on the mind for some reason.

Objective-C is this bizarre mix of at least two languages with three incompatible type systems glued together. I look forward to working in Objective-C++, which is three languages with at least five type systems

Open offices are terrible. I somehow feel crowded and lonely at the same time.

@Jacel It's hard not to bring conversations back to the same things that are worth avoiding here. Everything that's actually happening in the world seems worth avoiding. That suggests "ruminations on video game design" would be the best old standby!

@Jacel I've been trying to start more one-on-one conversations with people for literally exactly that reason. Public Internet has not felt healthy for me for a while.

@mkosler I read that as "tomatoes" at first and got really confused

Feelings of loneliness are weridly refreshing. I'm able to identify that I don't want to be away from people all the time! I've had this goal to isolate myself less, reach out to people more, and identifying loneliness as a distinct thing is something I can use to provoke myself to do that. Sometimes I forget that it's okay to just casually socialize with people and that it is okay to have motives to do so, and loneliness is a motive that is okay to act upon in such a way.

@arki oops. >..> I'm sorry I'm bad at remembering people across contexts. I bailed out of Twitter because it became a bunch of indistinct people screaming angrily at each other and it made me paranoid around people I would rather have trusted.

@arki Hi I'm one of those crazy Otherkin dragon people with an undignified rubber fetish

sometimes I want social media for updates on peoples' lives, and sometimes I want discussion and commentary, but for now I just want latex or latex-covered scalie folks (explicitly including dragons and kobolds) cavorting indecently on my timeline and I should actively seek out more of that

I want overengineered solutions to nonexistent problems, but like actual nonexistent problems, like griffin overpopulation or merfolk looters

@Gargron Humans are phenomenally bad at password management and generation - the sweeping majority of passwords are recycled, an obvious personal reference, and not long enough. Hell, I'm a software engineer and most of my passwords are inadequate and I know it but I can't be arsed to make a decent one

A 3D face scanner is harder to spoof than a 4-digit pin, which can be shoulder surfed. A 3D model is harder to make. A photographic face recognizer is useless, however.

USELESS TRVIA OF THE DAY:

The "We aint' found shit" guy in Spaceballs was played by Tim Russ, who went on to play Tuvok on Star Trek: Voyager.

For as flashy as the iPhone X is, and as much as I like the idea of an OLED display, I really miss the display width of my former 6S+ and the X doesn't solve that, so 8+ it is

I am not sure if I lost my tolerance for coffee, or if it always made my anxiety that much worse but I never really noticed it
