This isn’t a new observation but why might Jolene take her man anyway? Does she have a collection of men piled up in the basement or something?
@Leucrotta stacked like firewood
@frang given that it’s a country song I figured “she has them up on blocks in her backyard and she swears she’s gonna work on them soon” would be a little insensitive even though that’s sorta my old hometown
@Leucrotta There was actually a one-page ttrpg that had you singing additional stanzas of exactly this fearsome force of nature that is Jolene that can attract away any lover
@chimerror yeah I remember that where it was GM fiat what she actually does with the men! It really is kinda weird that there IS a batch of men, presumably all of them interested in Jolene, and yet Dolly thinks Jolene’s likely to go after hers.
@Leucrotta it's funny iirc the original Jolene the song was based on had the opposite fear that Dolly would take _her_ man and that's what inspired her to write the song
which you could see as a flex but I choose to see it as empathy
@chimerror I had no idea! That sounds more like hey, here’s a cool idea for a song, let’s run with it!
@Leucrotta Io'lene! Io'lene! Io'lene! IO'LENE! Gort barada nicto cough IO'LENE!
@obscurestar well THAT isn’t very nice of her!
Your beauty is beyond renown
upon your brow an iron crown
Is set above your eyes of glowing red,
and you could easily take my man
and fell him with your fearssome hands
and add him to the ranks of your undead
