yes I know mainstream media, I should stop drinking. I also need to stop smoking, eat more vegetables, do yoga, etc to extend my service life as long as possible for the good of the free market. Much the same way that during WWII a Japanese soldier's rifle was the personal property of the emperor and needed to be accorded the appropriate care.

"Harrison Ford is officially joining the MCU." Not *playing* anyone in the MCU mind, Harrison Ford is, himself, a superhero.

Uspol rant - - -

Were it possible somehow to push conservation purely by beating heads they’d be all for it. That’s their hate for social programs or safe spaces, the idea someone might get something without earning it preferably by beating heads. Unfortunately the punitive focus dovetails into the worry of the merely right-leaning, that somehow they’ll be stuck with a fiscal or emotional bill.

And, if you’re in any marginalized group, there’s no question what you are to be punished FOR.

Uspol rant - - -

To Republicans, being defined as a good person involves ability and willingness to punish. That’s their love of bloated defense budgets and police, the afterlife fantasies, the home defense fantasies, the colonialism and capitalism narratives, the idea that education is better when it’s authoritarian and dogmatic. That’s the worship of Trump as a strong man who speaks his mind and orders punishment, despite his complete lack of an actual backbone.

A weird personal thing; before the pandemic I cooked on the fly, throwing stuff together, maybe inspired by something I had at a restaurant. I started using recipes (loosely) much more often when I ate in more often (most of why I liked restaurants was getting out of the house).

The weirder part; I’ve apparently spent so much time cooking chicken gizzards and livers as a treat that I no longer think of chicken nuggets as a low quality special thing to eat too much of.

<American> the King of England doesn’t stomp around in alwite armor, he doesn’t even eat turkey legs and throw the bones on the floor, can’t we just like elect Brian Blessed or something? </American>

addendum, this middle of night thought connects to realizing that really uncomfortable stuff (and aging while being poor, working jobs I hate, etc are uncomfortable) *can* mean nothing more than itself, but opens me up to all sorts of negative pattern-matching.

is it in fact possible that, starting out handed already difficult goals, all or nothing duality, and then having the goalposts moved, it's simply easier to perceive myself as a failure when in fact I am a failure in some respects and profoundly successful in others? (Not to mention how there's this monolithic idea of failure as this world crushing thing rather than something that occasionally just happens.)

BRB getting myself permanently banned from Genius Lyrics for posting “the meaning is when the great 12th level anti paladin Klibanophoros fought back the fiendish owlbear hordes of the Ghoul-Queen, that was cool huh huh cool YEAH YEAH ROCK!” on Eternal Champion songs.

Diner and food photos

Lastly I wanted to post these Saturday but couldn’t. Here’s the exterior of the Hotcakes and Steak House in Portland; their sign (they’re no longer open 24 hours); the counter; and the veggie omelette I got.

Images, wildfires

Now the unpleasant part; heading out we saw the wildfire near Camas. From the Vista House you could see the smoke being caught up in the area, and by later in the afternoon it’d flattened as the fire continued.

Images, human but no eye contact

Before we got to the Vista House there was a place along the cliffs I stopped to grab photos of the river. You can make out the Vista House at right. My friend in the car got this photo of me while I was taking these!

Images, selfie with eye contact

Here’s photos from the Vista House. The river is very low thanks to the dry summer. I’ve included a selfie in part to show how windy it was! (I’d almost always wear my shapeless camo hat on a day this sunny, but literally couldn’t up there!)

Images, Halloween spider, dead trees

I scouted along the bridge by these other, different falls, and the hills blocked light enough the bridge cast the sort of clear shadow you’d expect from later in the day.

More from yesterday along the Hood River. Here’s the very cute mascot in a food court where we stopped but also a waterfall (two photos); the area was hit hard by fires in 2017 and you could still see some of the damage.

Stuff from yesterday. I tried to sketch the scenery along the river in a moving car because it’s profoundly difficult to get good shots of the really sudden drop off in some of the basalt cliffs. But the two photos should give you an idea of the lighting contrast.

That got me to remember how terrible it felt to lose randomly generated adventurers I didn’t care about to The Tomb of Horrors, it wasn’t that they died it felt like I was doing another adult testing if I was smart enough.

I was thinking about TTRPGs when I was a kid; how they didn’t have a clear win or lose condition, and that was really different from the rest of my life. Aside from AD&D’s level limits for non humans (and EVERYONE hated them!) there wasn’t a clear wrong choice of what to be; though oddly now it feels more that way and I’m facing that baggage again.

okay I thought Iggy Pop's "The Passenger" might sound good in Russian. But I had no idea it'd sound *this* good.
