The only thing I'd add to this design side of the conversation? The signifiers need to be unambiguous, if possible. Not really thinking there's a danger here of being otherwise, just a note. I still get the occasional twinge of anxiety about things like the hanky code. In the context they were created for, discreetness is good. But I always worried about accidental signaling without knowing the code or context.
