very tangentially uspol adjacent, question

So I want to know something, if someone can answer:

Is the Daily Kos considered a reliable news source? Our parents were just telling us about how you can't always believe the news (you _should_ be able to...) and how every news source puts a spin on it...

But this was in the context of trying to get us to not look at the news so much because it always causes anxiety spikes, but we feel like we need to know what's happening, so I don't know...

@Rosemary I mentally have them in the category of "too partisan to be useful for anything but propaganda", personally.

But yeah, there's no such thing as a neutral source. There's always an implicit framing and a choice of what facts to include and omit, and how to present them.

@starkatt we tend to think that if there's no such thing as a neutral source, at least one that spins things in a direction we generally agree with would cut down on the anxiety, maybe

@Rosemary ehhh. I think something bland-ass like NPR would be a lot better for that.

One of the functions of propaganda is to incite.

@starkatt That might be a good idea.

@starkatt We've only actively paid any sort of attention to news in the past couple years, so we don't have the most experience understanding how to best deal with things.

@Rosemary Yeah media literacy is a skill that's barely taught if at all, which is kind of tragic imo.

@starkatt @Rosemary

For what it's worth, I've made a lifetime habit of just not keeping up on the news, but...that is not really a great adaptation either.

It helps with anxiety but I end up uninformed about basically everything, especially things that might affect me in this hard time. :-/
