The job search mission has officially commenced with the first transmission of my updated resume.

I'm searching for senior IT support positions in the Seattle metro area. Please DM if you work for a non-shitty place that could use an experienced tech who is obsessed with fixing everything she can.

I don't think I'm gonna watch Groundhog Day this year. Maybe next year. But reliving the same day over and over again.... god, that's just the last ~330 days.

Also when I see it I like seeing it with a bunch of friends and, well.

Yeah.

pillowfort.social security issues Twitter links

I imagine people actually on Pillowfort already know but apparently the site had catastrophic security flaws and had to be taken down pending fixes

twitter.com/aquaqueer/status/1 is a thread linking to a number of other threads, but the tl;dr is that they weren't sanitizing inputs properly and it was possible to write posts that execute arbitrary javascript on anyone who sees them

Pillowfort's announcement on twitter is an image with no alt text, but it does link to a Facebook post with the full text twitter.com/Pillowfort_soc/sta

for the record, we heard stories of usernames being misparsed (e.g. changing your username to "community/BetaUsers" caused anyone who clicked on your profile to the beta users community) in December 2018, and that kind of bug wasn't fixed as of /yesterday/, so, like ... they really screwed this whole thing up...

I found out today a local bird refuge is looking for donations to help protect the land on which they operate. I visited this place some years ago and it’s run by people who really care about protecting the habitat. Despite the incredible diversity of birds we have in our tiny country we don’t have a whole lot of bird refuges, so saving this one is surely important.

Less than $2000 left! I'd also love for us to breach the goal, and shoot past it, because she's still not going to make enough money every month. I know we can do it!

TL;DR: Disabled Native American has less than 30 days to pay back US Govt Disability for having earned “too much money” to collect disability (but not enough to live on).

$4 and a share on your socials will save her life.

descriptions of dreams of predations, dubious claims about avian dreams

When cats dream, their paws twitch and they dream of hunting small furry rodents.

When birds dream, their talons twitch and they remember. They remember falling shrieking with their packmates onto other dinosaurs. They remember gulping down a small mammal as a midmorning snack, a prelude to the hunt later. They remember taking to the air and swooping down to carry off the cat's ancestors for a leisurely meal.

Every bird is a dinosaur, and sometimes they remember it.

dreams, those who are gone (-)

Dreamed last night that one of my dead friends came back as a ghost - I could see him but not hear him, and it was time to put him to rest. Heartbreaking.

rambling on some US minimum wage math, real long

The minimum wage in the US in the 1950s was $0.75/hr but here's the thing: based on what I've been reading almost no one got paid that. Only waitresses (yeah, waitresses got minimum wage; wild, no?). Most blue collar jobs started at $1/hr for part time and even the stuff we consider "Jobs for teens" started above minimum.

Grocery clerks and food prep got around $1.50 - $1.80.

The base inflation factor for the time span of 1950 - 2021 is about 10.5x. So that's roughly $17 - $20/hr in 2021 bucks.

"But wait, if the minimum was $0.75 and the inflation factor is around 10x, doesn't that mean our minimum now of $7.25 is close fine?" you may ask. No. I don't think so. Keep in mind almost no industry in the 1950s actually paid minimum as a standard, compared to now where it's pretty prevalent. A lot more mom & pop shops in the 1950s with some semblance of care for their employees, as opposed to megacorps setting compensation scales at the top.

In addition to that, while the inflation factor is 10.5x, real estate prices have increased by almost 25x (this flexes depending on where you look, of course). So the biggest factor in one's cost of living (rent, mortgage, etc) has increased more than twice that of inflation.

So if you're basing minimum wage purely on inflation from the last minimum wage, sure, $7.25 is close to right (but still too low). If you're looking at buying power in the economy and quality of life, we need close to $15 to come close; I'd even say it's not enough. We need $18.

By literally every factor available, the minimum needs to go up. This is absolutely indisputable. Depending on which factor you use, it needs to go up either 10% or 125%. I lean very far into the latter end of that scale.

In truth, we need to deflate the real estate market. In an ideal world I'd say increase the minimum to $15, but also do something about our housing crisis like tax the value of any not-resided home at 100% of its value.

Harsh? Hell yeah it is, but I'm tired of this.
