Ohhh yeah that's super gross. The intersection of Imperialism and toxic masculinity is a hoot.
This is just a buzzfeed video, so it's not as scholarly as the article you linked (which, thank you, bookmarking that) but it discusses the inverse of the Asian girl fetish- why Asian men aren't considered attractive in the US.

These male white supremacists/alt-righters (heretofore referred to as scumbags) often have unchecked raging Asian fetishes, which, as we know, come from a long ass legacy of Western imperialism in East and Southeast Asia (we can talk about South Asia too but right now I'm focusing on E and SE Asia).

- hypersexualization and therefore availability of Asian women
- stereotype that we’re nice and subservient and dateable and cute and sweet to everyone
And how these ideas specifically stem from histories of Western imperialism and colonialism.
Yikes. At most, dating someone who's Asian will give you insight into one particular person's life, and maybe their family structure. Not insight into the amalgam of different cultures, generations, immigrant or nonimmigrant experiences, and personal histories that "Asian" describes.
And yeah, "dated" as in, it didn't work out. So this tiny insight is the absolute most they would have learned.

I think it's always been a little awkward, but now that texting is the preferred form of casual communication, it feels even worse. At least when I was a kid, I talked on the phone frequently enough that I got somewhat used to it.
A friend just called me up on the phone wanting to... just chat? I'm so not used to people using phones the way we did in the 1990s. Totally threw me off.
