I had the coolest mental image and I think it might be a bit of dream I'm half-remembering

Futuristic smart-building skyscrapers occupied and controlled by protective spirits, able to morph into beasts with window-glass wings and elevator cars hanging from their tails, when the city is threatened the buildings come to life to protect themselves
