When the book is hitting on the proper tone though it works. There is a solid sense of humor about a rogue and his himbo just doing their thing.
violence and other thigns
Though every once in a while the book does a gory bit or some violence that makes me go "this doesnt fit the tone of the rest of the novel why are you doing this?"
I am so far really enjoying Theft of Swords by Michael J. Sullivan. It isn't the most ingenious fantasy novel ever but it has decent pacing, characters I want to spend time with, and a genuine setting I want to explore. That's all I really need: a reasonable story.
I did do a cursory check to see if Sullivan had anything super objectionable before I committed to this book. Couldn't find anything but I am sure there will be something at some point.
re: The Tregedy of X by Ellery Queen
I mean don't get me wrong I love amurder mystery where the police are utter dunderheads but... this needed more.
The Tregedy of X by Ellery Queen
At its core the main sleuth in this story is an interesting idea. A deaf man who is so incredibly competent, charismatic, smart, and massively sexy that everyone just wants to do what he asks. People respect the guy a lot and he's good at solving crimes because he logical (his skills work best in locked room scenarios). People just fall over themsleves for this Drury Lane or comment on how attractive he is. Also he's a master of disguise.
My issue is the pacing as said. If you set up that Drury Lane KNOWS who the killer is and then won't say you actually need to set up a better course of action then the attourney and police officer investigate random people because it feels like we are spinning our wheels. Lane knows who the killer is so investigating all these other people feels like a waste of time.
The ending chapter Lane actually reverses and says "Well I suspected but I wasn't sure if there were accomplices and we needed to get everyone" which.... you could have said that and kept the tension so we are left wondering if anyone else is in this conspiracy.
Also, the bigger problem is all the side characters and family members don't get real development. They're uninteresting which undercuts one of the strengths of a murder mystery which is outsized crazy character studies.
The solution to the puzzle is interesting. But to get there we have to tread so much uninteresting water.
Emergency funds needed to help a trans black system survive; boosts please
My father called me the first monday of last month. He said that he will need all the money I "own" (read the post linked at the end for the explanation) him by the end of the month. It is a little short of 4k and then there are my monthly expenses. The month has come and gone with absolute radio silence since his demands but last weekend I had to visit him and he confirmed that anytime now he'd be asking for it.
I'm still a terrible terrible mess. I missed half of my school days already and I'm still struggling with sleep and eating. At least I didn't pass out but it was really really hard to get out of bed end even just be able to write another one of this posts.
When I'm able to work I make ~10USD/day which would be more than enough to cover my bills but it is nowhere near enough to cover his demands and he doesn't care. I'm completely unable to hold a traditional job (without working myself to literal exhaustion as it happened already) so I really have no other options than work from home with what I can when I can.
I'm begging, please, if you're seeing this give it a boost. Maybe if you see this again, unboost and boost again. Pretty please. And of course if you can afford helping out I'd be really thankful.
thanks for your ever continued support

Marijuana legalization in NM
The governor of New Mexico has approved a bill to fulfill a key goal of the state’s marijuana legalization law by facilitating automatic expungements for prior cannabis convictions.
I finished it last night. I see what my problem is now. I didn't like the pacing and the three main characters annoyed me. The final chapter actually did a lot to redeem the book but it wasn't enough.
