took a nap, woke up with the word "horchata" stuck in my head, which I thought was a spiced hot chocolate, but evidently it's something entirely different. it's also intriguing, except for the bit where several online sources said it involves barley as an ingredient, which puts it on the nope list for me. :/
@green I looked this up on time, out of curiosity, and yeah, there's tons of regional variations. Some places make it with peanuts instead of rice, even.
@zebratron2084 @emanate I would be *so* into trying that! :D
@green @emanate I also wonder if the horchata at El Sabor on Aurora would be anything _remotely_ resembling GF... Probably not, since they handle so much flour in that kitchen, but it's at least a recipe to aspire to.
I would not be AT ALL surprised if you could find a GF horchata or pseudorchata at a good upscale grocery these days. I'll have a look next time I'm at a Central Market! But ideally, you want freshly made, with all the nice little grainy bits...
@green It's sadly gone now, but there was a Latin American style cafe near my work, and they had a Horchata Latte coffe drink. Theirs was the peanut-based type, and extra delicious.
@green
I've only had it with rice, and that's how Raccoon makes it when she does make it.
@green Found this! <3 http://www.notjustbaked.com/mexican-horchata/
@green Oh, horchata! I never heard it had barley in it. All the stuff I've ever had is rice milk based. There's probably some barley-less versions and at least one brand of pre-made mix (Krave, with the rest of the 'hispanic food' section in my grocery) but I've never checked if that has barley as an ingredient.
It is tasty but usually far too sweet for me.
