yesterday's wildlife volunteering report (dead animal handling, no animal death)
and then (the actual dead animal handling part) our rehabber gave us volunteers a brief training/orientation on how they splint breaks in bird wings and legs, what they look for when birds are brought in, etc. she demonstrated with a seagull and crowned kinglet, both previously deceased. they use coathangers to splint larger birds' legs, and paper clips for smaller ones!

so I took a seasonal project to clean the boots for Raccoon Nursery 1. there's three pairs of rubber boots on posts outside RN1, because raccoon contagion can be LITERALLY DEADLY so wearing your own shoes when the nurseries are in use is Discouraged. the boots were pretty clean already, though. I scrubbed and disinfected them anyway, and washed out a couple of spiders.

yesterday's volunteering was mostly dull. our rehabber has been assigning us jobs, so I cleaned outside enclosures--one flicker, who was FREAKING OUT OMG and I therefore tried to keep it as brief as possible, and one owl who beak-clicked at me but seemed otherwise unconcerned about my presence, so I did a bit more in there. still, both put together took less than an hour.
@JulieSqveakaroo yeah. yeeeaaaaaahhhhh. it looked like the intro to a video/computer game of some kind. it definitely falls into some weird Uncanny Valley for me. :|
zebra-handling; 12Fold; legend of five rings(?!?)
@zebratron2084 all this time, I've never asked--what are Jovians like? 'cause that's where I'm nominally from, and so far most such things have fit me a little too closely for comfort (holy shit I am such a Sagittarius it isn't even funny, also Year of the Pig yep lol)
It is, tragically, that time again, and I’ve got top-of-the-month bills to pay. If you can, please consider helping out:

so now I get to eat a hard boiled egg or two and then trundle off to the stores for cat fud and bottled water, because ???? aauuuugggghhhh I don't want to be doing any of this I want to GO BACK TO SLEEP and make this day over faster. ;________;
Sub-tooting Discourse
@literorrery @mawr of course, one of the people I know is particularly prone to subtooting is also an LJ veteran, so *shrug*?
I think part of the reason I avoid it so much is that I have a *strong* aversion to anything that even slightly resembles passive-aggressive behavior to me, For Reasons, and subtooting pushes all those buttons. I can usually shrug it off when it's directed at me, but actually doing it makes me feel icky. :|
Sub-tooting Discourse
@mawr @literorrery I understand the impulse to sub-toot, but I also understand the reasons why not to, and having the tools to do literally anything else, it's vanishingly rare for me to choose to do it. but I think that's a mindset that I was able to develop in LJ days, and I wonder if Kids These Days, never really having been a part of the LJ culture, just don't see viable options.
Sub-tooting Discourse
@literorrery @mawr okay yeah, this bit--"the habit of treating public communication spaces like private environments"--yess. I mean, it was a thing even back in LJ days, when you *could* make a group that consisted of "everybody *except* X" to vent/flail/ask for explanations in, or you could make a public post calling-out-but-not-naming X, and plenty of people chose the latter. but the fact that there *was* that viable alternative made it much more obviously drama-mongering.
@cute_weeds right, because you don't want to start getting feral computer colonies out in the business park wilderness
packs of feral computers roaming the suburbs, hunting stray or unattended cell phones, surreptitiously nesting in your spare bandwidth, foraging through dumpsters for trashed components
shit I want this now
weaponized snark
@zebratron2084 I hear and accept your feelings on this matter, and support them as valid.
