@porsupah Redid a migration to a self-hosted mastodon instance. But can't migrate you from awoo.space, because of their local settings :(

Once I get back home from the holiday family visit, I'm going to set about installing a single-user instance due to the various reports that mastodon.social is becoming essentially unmoderated because it grew too quickly for volunteer staff to keep up with.

I'm hoping that sometime around Tuesday or Wednesday the national madness will lift, and people will enter a state of awkwardly pretending that England is a perfectly normal country and there wasn't a massive cultural over-reaction.

Gentle reminder to people still reading this - I've moved over to @JayBlanc@mastodon.social, so you need to change your following list to follow me there.

Social Trauma

So today in addition to all the stress from having to find a new place to live, I was forcibly reminded of how I wasted a decade on a hug-box community that was run by someone who was a Real-Life Sex Offender, and the fall out left me feeling socially ostracised and suicidal.

A sad and harsh reminder that it is probably for the best that from now on I never attempt to reach out to anyone I knew from back then, because there's a strong chance they still consider me a 'betrayer' for not submitting to co-dependency.

Just transferred back to being @JayBlanc@mastodon.social , as the errors that led me to migrate away from there are fixed.

@SamIO My experience is that I got an error message that didn't tell me what was wrong, and the documentation about the instances federation policy wasn't discoverable by default unless you turn on 'advanced' mode, is buried deep within nested menus when is, and doesn't actually say what allow-list federation means from the user's point of view.

Urgh. I do wish getting cranky with people wasn't a symptom of my depression.

One of Mastodon's flaws is that if you want to follow someone on another Mastodon instance than yours, they need to be federated, and if they're not then you'll need to ask their admin to ask your admin for federation. But this isn't actually explained well to new users.

@noiob That only appears after you turn on advanced web-interface under appearances in preferences. It's not present in the default dashboard.

@noiob Once logged in, all the links to the internal documentation and about page disappear because the home page redirects to the dashboard instead and there's no links from the dashboard to this. So it's very hard to find this information without logging out.

@noiob I'm having problems following someone on redwombat.social

No idea if the problem is on their end.
