Three people are being told to "report to me" instead of being given their own project because the "central logging infrastructure" idea I proposed at the start of the year has taken on a life of its own and the stretch goal I vaguely suggested to my boss has become one of the lynchpins on which my manager has staked our capacity to assert that we're capable of delivering consistent value as an organization.
This is not how I wanted to become a manager.

@literorrery you're all in it together. You can do this. You are smart and kind.

Of all the ways that could have gone, I suspect this was the "best." After much back and forth, it was revealed that the impetus behind the project was the misbegotten sense that better tooling could solve the problem of "our primary software solution produces volumes of inactionable logs for troubleshooting," and my boss is convinced he can motivate people to solve that by architecting a new tool, rather than fixing the logging coming out of the software.
