@mawr @kelseyhusky There's a book I love immensely, called "The Nanotech Chronicles" by Michael Flynn, in which somebody notes that every technological change is a social change in disguise, and that it's the job of every technologist to consider the social impact of technology. Engineers are, jargonistically, technologists that refuse to consider the social aspects of technology.
@kelseyhusky @mawr I think this is where I have to break voice and say that "engineer" is a term I use in a heavily jargoned way, likely unfairly, to indicate that the developer/designer/programmer has only gotten as far as whether something is possible without questioning whether it's desirable, beneficial, or well-considered. Folks who don't test failure paths. Folks who reject accessibility concerns. Folks who require firstname-lastname on forms that only need an identifier.
@kelseyhusky @mawr computer good engineer bad.
Trans issues, cis issues, argh
@Jacel Even just pointing out that cis _is_ an identity can be fraught enough, to say nothing of "human," "singlet," "orthomorph," "organic," "person," or any of a bunch of other possible ways in which folks can vary from the default set of assumptions. Weaponizing such ideas is bound to be a bad move.
Trans issues, cis issues, argh
@Jacel At the risk of oversimplifying and exaggerating, I think there's a pretty big gap between "we have to stop letting them kill us" and "we need to kill them back to show them how it feels." Calling out anti-trans attitudes, expressions of trans pride, pointing out the history of erasure and identity loss, sure. Invalidating cis identity, even humorously, doesn't really seem to help us.
Trans issues, cis issues, argh
@Jacel I don't think we can help every case of people seeking offense at others' expressions of pride, but we can damned well do a better job of not belittling others.
Trans issues, cis issues, argh
@Jacel We should be aiming for better than our opponents. Friendly fire creates enemies. Justifying the demand for others' emotional labor to permit us our venting of spleen is a shitty move and we should do better than that.
@mawr computer bad
@irisjaycomics Sounds tasty. Do it.
@DaveHiggins@octodon.social Also, the OS, Firefox, Java, and Lenovo's bios all updated in the span of half an hour when I cracked open my laptop this morning, so some of my angst right now is admittedly me feeling like everybody has stuck their fingers through the internet and _touched_ things at the moment.
@DaveHiggins@octodon.social Honestly, it's quite possible that I do because I want security updates without question. Somehow it escaped my mental space that "rearchitecting the entire browser" would classify as an "update" until now. I figured I'd have to go download Quantum, which I'd do once NoScript was available.
buni screeches in all-caps, cussin'
CONSENT IS FUCKING IMPORTANT IN SOFTWARE AND IN EVERYTHING.
SOME PEOPLE CHOSE YOUR DAMNED BROWSER BECAUSE IT'S CHUNKY AND OLD WHICH MEANS FAMILIAR AND NON-THREATENING. CHANGING IT TO KEEP UP WITH THE PAGES JUST PISSES ME OFF, AS DOES ENTIRELY ELIMINATING THE ABILITY TO RUN MY OLD EXTENSIONS IN A SANDBOX. I DON'T CARE ABOUT THE PERFORMANCE HIT; I CARE ABOUT NOT SEEING PEOPLE'S SHITTY JAVASCRIPT ADS.
FUCK.
Foodcrime
I want to come back here with a group. The garlic sauce was incredible, they have eight different sauces and they're almost all spicy. Fried rice, add-ins for the hot pot, and hot oolong.
Foodcrime
Hey, @irisjaycomics and @makyo. Check out the garlic catfish at JoyFish on Aurora. "Grilled Fish in a Hot Pot."
Work, Affirmations
In ten minutes, I'm meeting with the VP of Engineering to promote the project on which I've been working for the last ten minutes. My only teammate has an interview and my manager has the flu. I have a wiki page of architecture and sequence diagrams, a code base, and the strength of my convictions to carry me through this meeting.
I will be okay. My work is valuable, my skills worthwhile. I am able to speak to my own efforts successfully, and I can be as convincing as I need.
@Aradia@mastodon.social @Ulfra_Wolfe@witches.town @drwho Agreed.
