@literorrery @adeptomega @mawr answering in consultation with Mawr cause they have their face full of s'more. #1 Making sure the chimney has been swept/cleared and open is number #2 is making sure the flue is open, which should be done as part of cleaning the chimney. #3 is making sure that the interior of the fireplace isn't covered with paint that would be dangerous if it is near fire.

@mawr Oh, hey, do you know what to check in a fireplace when lighting fires in them? We'd like to use ours but I haven't had a lit fireplace at home in twenty-five years.
