"I'm Mad as Hell, and I'm Not Going to Take It Anymore" (cw: shitty current events)

"I don't have to tell you things are bad. Everybody knows things are bad. It's a depression. Everybody's out of work or scared of losing their job. The dollar buys a nickel's worth. Pigs murder in the streets and there's nobody anywhere who seems to know what to do, and there's no end to it. We know the air is unfit to breathe and our climate is unfit to sustain, and we sit doomscrolling while some journalist tells us about record bank profits, as if that's the way it's supposed to be.

"We know things are bad - worse than bad. They're shit. It's like everything everywhere is going to shit, so we don't go out anymore. We sit in the house, and slowly the world we are living in is getting smaller, and all we say is: 'Please, at least leave us alone in our living rooms. Let me have my Internet and my Video Games and my Gas Stove and I won't say anything. Just leave us alone.'

"Well, I'm not gonna leave you alone. I want you to get MAD! I don't want you to write to your congressman, because that does jack shit. I don't know what to do about the depression and the inflation and the Russians and the white collar crime. All I know is that first you've got to get mad.

"You've got to say: 'I'm a human being, god-dammit! My life has value!'"

-Lightly Modernized quote from the 1976 film "Network."

@wobblewuffess I suspect that phrase was a lot more true back before virtual worlds housed so much of our valuable infrastructure :thaenkin:

oh shit i can upload again and subject you to my nonsense

Everyone is welcome on the #fediverse except cops, racists, bigots, and fascists. :blobbloc:
(If you see something, say something! That report feature goes to your instance admin, and can selectively be forwarded anonymously to the originating instance).

Ain't no profit incentives to be found here, baby :blobuwu:

So do y'all still gently kobolds 'round here or what :koboldpats:

Sometimes I want to post things without having the context and platform of being an instance admin. I have a lot of very fond memories of this instance. Hell, talking with Crom was what inspired me to start my own.

I miss Crom; I think about him a lot these days. I hope they're doin' alright out there somewhere. :blobhaj_heart:

:plush: 🏙 📣 ❕New Hosting Provider + Upgrade!

🔶 Since we decided we could no longer trust Scaleway to host our instance, we've moved to a new host-- @mastohost! They were kind enough to get us back online using our backups and existing cloud image storage.

🔷 And they're fast, too!! ^.^ And super nice!

🔶 While we were at it, we had to upgrade to Mastodon 2.4.0 to use their platform, so we went ahead and did that, too. ^^

🔷🔶 WELCOME BACK! 🎉

:plush: 🏙 📣 ❕Downtime Explanation

🔶 Henlo soff frens! We had some downtime due to a hardware failure at Scaleway that their techs still haven't figured out how to fix.

🔷 D:<

🔶 Good news though! We were set up with nightly backups, so the instance is back online!

🔷 ^.^!

🔶 Unfortunately, that means we lost everything from 5pm PST May 30th up until the server went down at ~3:30pm May 31st.. so if you're missing something, that's likely why. Sorry, frens; we did our best!

🔷 This sucks!!!! ;o;

✨plush✨ city status (+++)

I've got the backup working! :tada:

Postgres is... weird. Really weird. I dropped and re-created the database and it somehow kept existing relations in place. :thaenkin:

I'm spending time I don't have on this. >..>;;; Heck.

Scaleway has failed to bring the server back online. Their last contact with me was an apology some 12 hours ago with an escalation to "Engineering" and a promise to get back to me eventually.

I've asked them to delete the server and close my account.

If I can't get this backup working, I'm calling it over.

I'm beginning to suspect my database backup of ✨plush✨ city is useless.

Every restore I've managed thus far without errors during the restore has resulted in runtime errors like

ActiveRecord::StatementInvalid (PG::UndefinedTable: ERROR: relation "users" does not exist

I'm out of time to work on this today. ;~;

@mastohost I'd have to import the existing dump to a new Postgres server so I can dump it back out again in the requested format. I should be able to do that.

@mastohost All media storage totals up to probably something just short of 2GB uncompressed, but I suspect that's mostly cached public images from other instances; I was using Amazon S3 for image hosting. BTW-- can I keep hosting my own images off-site? It's not a dealbreaker if no, but It'd be neat to keep all the images live. ^^

Yes, I can host it on my house server for HTTPS download.

My pg_dump is just a .sql file; 297MB uncompressed.

The whole thing's in a tgz file that's 1.6GB i size.

@mastohost I'm totally game-- and I'd be happy to send some extra cash your way for the effort. :D

How would you like to proceed?

@mastohost I believe the last version we were running was 2.3.0.

@mastohost Hmm. I'll have to get it upgraded first, then. Thanks for the info!

@kara@occult.camp There's more to a community than how many people advertise you to others, y'know.
